이글의 목적은 첫째, 개별적 이주로서 이민의 인간 본성적 차원의 원인을 발견하는 것이며, 둘째, 발견된 원인이 정체성 특히 국가정체성에 미치는 영향을 분석함으로써 이민 현상을 설명하는 것이다. 이주한 국가가 단일민족사회이건 다민족사회이건 간에, 이주자가 국가정체성을 형성하고 유지하는 것은 이민의 성공여부를 판단하는 중요한 요인이 될 수 있기 때문이다. 이를 위해 루소의 사상에 기초하여 먼저 사회와 민족의 개념과 발달을 살펴봄으로써 이 개념들이 인간 본성과 직접적으로 연결되어 있음을 증명할 것이다. 둘째, 문화와 정체성의 개념을 정의하고 사회와 민족의 개념과 비교하여 설명함으로써, 다문화사회라는 개념과 특징을 보다 명료하게 정의할 것이다. 이 두 가지 과정에서 이민이 발생하는 본성적 차원의 원인들이 도출될 것이며, 이 원인들에 기초하여 다문화사회에서의 이민과 민족정체성, 그리고 국가정체성과의 관계를 설명할 것이다.

This article aims to find the causes of immigration in the dimension of human nature, and to explain why the individuals choose to immigrate by analysing the influence of the causes on state identity. In doing so, firstly this article proves that the concepts of society and nation are originated from human nature by tracing out the origins and their developments in Rousseau`s works. The causes of immigration including ``re-migration`` and ``reverse-migration`` will be found in such. Secondly, in order to make clear the concept and characteristics of multicultural society, this article conceptualizes the meanings of culture and a few different kinds of identity, and tries to explain all kinds of immigration in the multicultural societies on the bases of the relationships of the attributes that the concepts have.
