Purpose: This study was done to investigate the relationship of ethical leadership to perceived organizational support and organizational commitment, and explored the mediating role of perceived organizational support in ethical leadership and organizational commitment of nurse. Method: Data were collected from 256 nurses in one city. Data from the completed questionnaires was analyzed with the SPSSWIN and AMOS programs. Result: Ethical leadership related positively to perceived organizational support and organizational commitment. There was also a positive relationship between perceived organizational support and organizational commitment. It was found that perceived organizational support showed a partial mediating role between relationship of ethical leadership and organizational commitment. Conclusion: The results suggest that positive effects in developing organizational commitment in nurses occur when nurse administrators are concerned about ethical leadership and perceived organizational support.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare recipients`` health behavior, attitude to using medicaid, medication compliance, and the changes in hospital cost and visit-day of in-patient and out-patient care between tele-care regions (TCR) and general care regions (GCR) in Korean medicaid. Method: The design of the study was ex-post facto comparing recipients in TCR and GCR. The sample included 625 persons in TCR and 410 persons in GCR. To collect materials, the case manager interviewed recipients of medicaid and filled out questionnaires which were analyzed through SAS/PC 9.1. Results: In studying health behavior and medication, compliance was not significant. However, the attitude to using medicaid was significantly more positive in TCR than in GCR. In out-patients, the change of hospital visit-day was not significant between TCR and GCR, but TCR showed a reduction in hospital cost compared to GCR. For in-patient recipients, GCR showed a greater reduction in changes in hospital cost and visit-day compared to TCR. Conclusions: The results of the study show that attitudes to using medicaid via telephone are positive and results are more effective than hospital visit consultation, and the cost of out-patient care could be reduced.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship between critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability in nursing students, thereby providing basic data for nursing education. Method: A convenience sample was drawn from 161 nursing students. Data were collected from June 2008 to October 2008. Instruments used in the study were the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) developed by Facione & Facione (1992) and the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) developed by Heppner & Petersen (1982). The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe`` test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with SPSS 12.0. Results: The total mean score for CCTDI was 278.41 and PSI was 119.23. For general characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in CCTDI according to satisfaction with nursing majors (F=6.29, p=.00) and PSI according to academic achievement (F=3.45, p=.02) and marital status (t=2.43, p=.02). A statistically significant negative correlation was found between CCTDI and PSI. Critical thinking self-confidence, Analyticity and Inquisitiveness were significant predictors of PSI. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that critical thinking disposition influences problem solving ability. Therefore, the findings provide significant basic data for nursing education and nursing practice.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the cost using different methods of costing nursing activities for patients with chronic otitis media having surgery. Method: Data were collected from 30 patients who had mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty. To compare the cost, the researchers used three different costing methods; consumed time, resource based relative value scale (RBRVS), and critical pathway (CP). Results: Twenty-six nursing activities for surgical patients with chronic otitis media were found. Total cost was 83,843.7 won using RBRVS. The costliest activity was recording at 9,734.4 won, followed by confirmation of doctors`` orders at 9,302.4 won, and injection with infusion pump at 9,072.0 won. There was a difference in nursing activities performed according to the length of hospital stay, and the cost was highest on the surgery day at 13,417.8 won. Comparatively, the total cost was 72,014.4 won using CP. Conclusions: Nursing activities are performed in various forms according to the disease and patient``s condition, and different nursing activities are executed according to the length of hospital stay. In order to measure the load of nursing activities and distribute it appropriately, it is necessary to analyze the cost of nursing activities by the process of nursing services performed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the costs and benefits of home nursing care services between public health centers (PHC) and private hospitals. Method: Participants were 105 patients who had received home nursing care services from a private hospital or public health center. From a societal perspective, the researcher identified the costs and benefits of the services using performance data and calculated the net benefit and benefit/cost ratio. Result: The net benefit of the home nursing care service based in the PHC was 165.9 million won and benefit/cost ratio was 2.0, while the net benefit of the home nursing care services by the private hospital was 141.1 million won and benefit/cost ratio was 1.7. Both types of programs were economically validated. Conclusion: Home nursing care services were basically efficient as the results showed a positive net benefit. A cost-benefit analysis indicated that the PHC-based home nursing care services were more efficient than that of the private hospital. With limited human resources and management standards in public health centers, results suggest the need for a more systematic management of the home nursing care service to improve the health of this vulnerable community population.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to describe events resulting in perceived hurts in nursing, and to identify factors influencing forgiveness in clinical nurses. Methods: The study was a descriptive correlation design. From May to July, 2009, the researcher used interviews to collect data from 148 clinical nurses from five hospitals in D city. Results: Clinical nurses received perceived hurt from peer-nurses, care-givers, and doctors, and the reasons for the perceived hurts were blame, neglect, and valuation. Levels of forgiveness in clinical nurses were different according to who caused the perceived hurt, the degree of the perceived hurt, and endeavors to resolve the perceived hurts. Levels of forgiveness in clinical nurses were negatively correlated with age, degree of perceived hurt, and degree of anger expression, and positively correlated with degree of self-esteem. The strongest predictors of forgiveness in clinical nurses were degree of anger expression, age, and degree of hurt. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that nursing staff should be able to identify reasons for perceived hurt in clinical nurses and provide a forgiveness program for each nursing situation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing intention of migration by Korean hospital nurses. Methods: Using cross sectional correlational design, data were collected from 512 nurses working in 7 hospitals ranging in size from 300 to 900 beds in D city and K province of Korea, Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multiple hierarchical regression using the SPSS program, Results: There were significant differences in intention of migration by age, educational background, marital status, work experience, and yearly incomes. Although there was high intention of migration of the subjects, the level of preparation for migration was relatively low. The variables that were independently associated with intention of migration were graduates of RN-BSN program, personal factors of subjects, and environmental factors. Those who had lower perception on nursing images and work condition had significantly higher intention of migration than those who had higher perception. Full model accounted for 37.3% of the variance in intention of migration. Conclusion: To prevent brain drain of competent nurses in Korea, appropriate strategies to enhance work condition should be developed and the effect of migration of nurses should be investigated in further studies.

Purpose: This study was conducted to compare job satisfaction, self-esteem, and nursing task performance between registered nurses (RN) and nurse assistants (NA) in long-term care hospitals. Method: The sample consisted of 203 nursing personnel (RN 99 and AN 104), who were working in one of 5 long-term care hospitals in 5 different areas. Data were collected by structured questionnaires from March 15 to April 30, 2010, and analyzed using the descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/Win 17.0 program. Result: There was no significant difference between nurses and nurse assistants in job satisfaction and self-esteem. But nurses had higher levels of nursing task performance than nurse assistants. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the necessity of developing programs that will help to improve job satisfaction and self-esteem in nurses and nursing task performance in nurse assistants. Strategies need to be developed to maximize the value of the existing workforce without impacting on the quality of care delivered.

Purpose: To determine the impact of the Patient Safety Program on the safety culture of nursing department. Methods: Patient Safety Program focused on medication safety was launched by QI team and patient safety committee. Patient Safety Program was composed of the establishment of improved reporting system as s way to learn from error, ``Patient Safety Guard`` movement, and continuous education for medication safety, With one group pretest-posttest design, nurses`` perception of the safety culture were measured with self-administered questionnaire. Subjects were all nurses and managers in nursing department of a tertiary teaching hospital in Seoul. Collected data from survey was statistically analyzed using t-test. Results: Patient Safety Program had been continued for 20 months in participation of all nurses and managers. Safety culture was improved (pretest=2.84, posttest=2.90, p<.001; 4 point scale). Conclusions: This study indicates that there has been a statistically significant increase in the nurses`` perception of safety culture. These findings suggest that Patient Safety Program had made great contribution toward system wide safety culture in the hospital. To improve safety culture, leadership supports and flexibility to apply tailored interventions to the hospital were required necessarily.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and job stress of clinical nurses in small to medium-sized hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 152 nurses working in 4 local public hospitals in one district. EI was measured with the scale developed by Law, Wong, & Song (2004), and job stress with the scale by Choi, Kang, & Woo (2006). Data were analyzed with PASW (SPSS) 18.0, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe`` test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in EI according to work time, in self-emotional appraisal according to salary, in regulation of emotion according to marital status, age, work time, and salary. There were also significant differences in job stress including somatization, depression and anger according to marital status, work time, and salary. Correlation between EI and job stress was negative. EI explained 17.3% of variance in job stress. Conclusion: The findings indicate that to decrease job stress, nursing managers need to develop EI, especially self-emotional appraisal and regulation of emotion for nurses in their twenties and for unmarried nurses.
