비평가 임화와 김남천은 식민지시대 비평사에서 가장 중요한 족적과 흔적을 남긴 대표적인 비평가들이다. 흥미로운 사실은 이 둘의 관계이다. 이들은 비판, 연대, 제휴, 존경 등의 다양한 방식을 통해 비평적 우정을 맺으면서 비평 활동을 전개해왔다. 이들은 카프(KAPF)의 실세이자 주역이었으며, 카프문학운동, 해방 직후의 진보적 문학운동, 죽음에 이르기까지 함께 비평적 동지로서 함께 해왔다. 이런 맥락에서 볼 때, 이들은 뤼시엥 골드만의 ``두 사람이 함께 책상 들기``의 관계에 가깝다고 할 수 있다. 임화의 입장에서 볼 때 김남천은 끊임없는 갱신과 정진이 요구되는 후배이자 동지였다. 임화가 때로 김남천에게 신랄한 비판을 수행한 것은 동지적 비판의 차원에서 이해될 수 있다. 이에 비해 김남천에게 임화는 존경하는 선배이자 위대한 스승이었다. 임화와 김남천은 당대의 어떤 비평가보다도 당시의 문단 시스템과 구조에 대한 근원적인 비판을 전개했다. 이 점은 그들이 문단에서의 지위와 상관없이 투철한 비판정신을 지닌 비평가라는 사실을 의미한다. 임화와 김남천은 일제 말 군국주의 파시즘이 휘몰아치는 와중에 협력과 저항 사이에서 절묘한 입지를 보여주었다. 때로 이 둘은 대일 협력이라고 해석될 수 있는 흔적을 보여주었으며, 동시에 소극적 저항이라고 해석될 수 있는 글을 남기기도 했다. 저항과 협력 사이의 줄타기는 이 두 비평가의 비평적 운명이었을지도 모른다. 그들의 죽음도 바로 이 지점에서 비롯되었다고 할 수 있다. 이 둘의 동지적 관계가 깊은 우정의 단계로 진입하지 못한 것은 아쉬운 대목이 아닐 수 없다.

This paper is a study on the relationship between Im-hwa(林和) and Kim-namcheon(金南天), the two Korean representative critics in the Japanese colonial period. They are the leading critics who made the most important achievement in that period. It is very interesting that they forged critical friendship in the various ways such as criticism, solidarity, partnership, and admiration. They were the critics who had the most influences and played the leading roles in KAPF. They worked together as comrades in the criticism field until their deaths in 1953. Viewed from the perspective of Im-wha, Kim-namcheon was both the junior and comrade who needed constant criticism. Therefore, Im-wha sometimes scathingly criticized Kim-namcheon. On the contrary to this, Kim-namcheon considered Im-wha as a respectful senior and great mentor. Both Im-wha and Kim-namcheon criticised the system and structure of the literary circles more than any other critics. This means that they were the critics who had the spirit of the thorough critical mind. At the same time, they both kept the exquisite stances between cooperation and resistance in the wild storms of the Japanese militarism. Sometimes they left the traces which can be considered as cooperation with Japan. At the same time, they left some writings which can be interpreted as passive resistance. Walking a tightrope between cooperation and resistance was the fate which these two critics couldn`t avoid. But, unfortunately, it seemed that their relationship didn`t develop into the existential conversation and deep friendship.
