This paper establishes a modeling and simulation procedure for structural response and reliability of a cylindrical array sensor on submarines under the shock generated by underwater explosion. The structural reliability of SONAR is important because the submarine could get out of combat ability by the structural damage of the SONAR upon explosion. A cylindrical array sensor was first modeled using the finite element method. Modal analysis was then performed for the check of the reliability of the modeling. The shock resistance simulations were performed for the responses to the structural shock waves and for the responses to the directly applied underwater shock waves, according to BV-043 and MIL-STD-901D, respectively. The stresses of the structure were evaluated with von-Mises scheme. Vulnerable regions were exposed through mapping the maximum stress to the structural model. Maximum stress of the SONAR was compared with the yield stress of the material to examine the structural reliability.

In an attempt to improve adhesion strength between glass and metal due to use of Pb-free solder as a sealant between glass and metal in the manufacturing process of vacuum insulation window glass to maintain the vacuum volume, ultrasonic energy is often applied during the process of Pb-free sealing. In this study, we propose an ultrasonic vibrator with a 4mm end tip radius which performs resonance frequency of 60kHz and 14um or higher vibration displacement. A frequency variation due to applied pressure on piezo disks, which was excluded in the computer simulation, was verified experimentally, and we have demonstrated a 17um vibration displacement at 50V input through the performance test of a vibrator constructed with our specification.

This paper investigates the prediction of the dynamic strain response using acceleration response only. Two methods are proposed for the strain prediction; one is based on beam theory and the other is calculated by the frequency response function between acceleration and strain. First, it is estimated the dynamics of the simple notched beam, including the non-linearity, through the uni-axial vibration testing. Then, the dynamic strain response is predicted under two different methods using acceleration response. The validation of proposed methods is conducted by the comparison between measured strain and predicted values. The comparison reveals that the proposed method based on the FRF between acceleration and strain is more reliable one than that stemmed from beam theory and the maximum relative error is less than 8%.

This paper deals with an experimental study on the reaction of muscles by functional electrical stimulation(FES) with the design and fabrication of an ankle reaction apparatus. The ankle reaction apparatus consists of a circuit part and a kinematic part, and it monitors reaction time for a particular angle of joint rotation according to FES. The experimental results showed that the change of the ankle rotation angle was linearly proportional to the change of the magnitude of FES. It also showed that the muscle`s reaction time was constant no matter how large the magnitude of the stimulus. The results of this paper can be applied to develop an active-type walking-assistance robot.

While a dash panel component, close to passengers, plays a very important role to protect heat and noise from a power train, it is also a main path that transfers vibration energy and eventually radiates acoustic noise into the cavity. Therefore, it is important to provide optimal design schemes incorporating sound packages such as a dash isolation pad and a floor carpet, as well as structures. The present study is the extension of the previous investigation how design variables affect sound radiation, which was carried out using the simple plate and framed system. A novel FE-SEA hybrid simulation model is used for this study. The system taken into account is a dash panel component of a sedan vehicle, which includes front pillars, front side members, a dash panel and corresponding sound packages. Design variables such as panel thicknesses and sound packages are investigated how they are related to two main NVH indexes, sound radiation power(i.e. structure-borne) and sound transmission loss(i.e. air borne). In the viewpoint of obtaining better NVH performance, it is shown that these two indexes do not always result in same tendencies of improvement, which suggests that they should be dealt with independently and are also dependent on frequency regions.

This paper is concerned with the natural vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate with a rectangular hole in contact with the water. The addressed problem was solved by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method combined with the Green function method. This study presents the numerical approach, numerical results and experimental results. In addition, the validity of the approximate formula which mainly depends on the so-called non-dimensionalized added virtual mass incremental factor and the natural mode shape change due to the presence of the water were investigated. Experiments were also carried out to validate theoretical results. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that the effect of a square hole on the natural frequencies of the square plate in contact with water is different from the effect of a square hole on the natural frequencies of the square plate in air and the approximate formula can predict lower natural frequencies in water with a good accuracy.

In this paper, flow-induced flutter instability of a cantilever carbon nanotube conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Analytically nonlocal effect, transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton`s principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Variation of critical flow velocity of carbon nanopipes based on three different models such as analytically nonlocal model, partially nonlocal model, and local model are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

Since the engine and reduction gear in a naval vessel are usually supported by the mounting system separately, the misalignment between the input shaft of the reduction gear and the output shaft of the engine should occur caused by ship motion. In this study, this misalignment is estimated from the linear static analysis assuming that the phase of movements of the engine and reduction gear at low frequency range is same and the dynamic effect is not affect to them. Through comparing the relative displacement of the engine and reduction gear calculated from linear static analysis to that from dynamic analysis as well as experiment, the assumption in this study could be verified.

To reduce the vibration in industrial settings, the viscous fluid dampers have been widely used. Since the damper shows a viscoelastic behavior, many methods to predict the behavior have been investigated. But the methods did not consider a change of damper size that is important factor for practical design engineer. In this study, to predict a change of damper ability with respect to a change of damper size, the dynamic experiment were conducted with fixed aspect ratio and gap. The damping coefficient at zero frequency was computed through theoretical and experiment approach in order to fit the experimental results using fractional derivative Maxwell model.

The paper presents the novel approach to solve some problems occurred in application of the genetic algorithm to the determination of the optimal tire pattern sequence in order to reduce the tire air-pumping noise which is generated by the repeated compression and expansion of the air cavity between tire pattern and road surface. The genetic algorithm has been used to find the optimal tire pattern sequence having a low level of tire air-pumping noise using the image based air-pumping model. In the genetic algorithm used in the previous researches, there are some problems in the encoding structure and the selection of objective function. The paper proposed single encoding element with five integers, divergent objective function based on evolutionary process and the optimal evolutionary rate based on Shannon entropy to solve the problems. The results of the proposed genetic algorithm with evolutionary process are compared with those of the randomized algorithm without evolutionary process on the two-dimensional normal distribution. It is confirmed that the genetic algorithm is more effective to reduce the peak value of the predicted tire air-pumping noise and the consistency and cohesion of the obtained simulation results are also improved in terms of probability.

The vibration of a LP turbine case may cause the failure of power generation and reduce the life of its facility. In this study we carried out on-site measurements of a LP turbine in order to find the cause of the vibration and conducted experimental and numerical modal analysis of the turbine case with its support frame. The measurement and the modal analysis show that the natural frequency of the turbine becomes close to 60Hz due to the subsidence of the support. The elimination of the subsidence by shimming between the turbine and the support frame gave rise to the reduction of the vibration of the LP turbine case.
