The study aims to provide insight into Utagoe Movement prevalent over Japan before the mid-1950s, with focus on relations among Soviet Union, China, Chosun and Japan`s communist party. By identifying relations between Japan and communist nations at the time, the study aims to shed light on the country`s postwar perception of East Asia. Social realism served as the backbone of literary policy in the Soviet Union no later than in the 1950s. At the time, China and Chosun embraced the ideology, which then was incorporated into these countries undergoing change in accordance with reality involved. But the essential traits still remained intact such as emphasis on political leaning, class, respect for tradition and grassroots. Against the background, the songs created in the Soviet Union, China and Chosun were adopted by Utagoe Movement in Japan. A case in point is 『Collection of Songs for the Young』, which is categorized into songs admiring patriotism, political leader, political struggle, militarism, labor and lyrical sentiment. Such characteristic is evident in songs of China and Chosun as well, demonstrating the fact that Soviet Union had great impact on songs composed in these countries. The fact is that Japanese songs contained in 『Collection of Songs for the Young』 are characterized by admiration of political struggle and labor, excluding only a few lyrical and traditional folk songs. The adoption of traditional folk songs presumably is connected with Utagoe Movement, influenced by change in policy of Japan`s communist party and socialist states` literary policy with emphasis on national union and tradition. Before the world war broke out, Japan regarded itself as the only strong power in Asia, with Japan`s communist party drawing all-out support from international communist forces. But Japan`s imperialism eventually fell to pieces, causing Japan`s communist party aspiring to bring about revolution to collapse. On the other hand, Japan`s collapse led China and Chosun to get freed from Japan`s colonial rule, motivating these countries to build socialist state aimed at liberating laborers and farmers from the shackle of suffering. Such dramatic change is vividly portrayed by Utagoe Movement songs. This shows contrasting appearance of Japan which, before the war, used to recognize itself as the country capable of liberating or governing Chosun and China with overbearing attitude and, after the war, underwent change in perception about China and Chosun in a way that sees the two countries as the ideal ones successfully achieving grassroots revolution that they had failed in.
