『시용무보(時用舞譜)』는 세종대왕이 조종(祖宗)의 문덕(文德)과 무공(武功)을 칭송하는 악가무로 창제한 신악(新樂)을 세조대왕이 종묘제례악으로 쓰기 위해 개작하여 기록한 악무보(樂舞譜)이다. 궁중무용의 전통 기록법은 두 가지로 전한다. 하나는 무용제목과 무용용어를 춤 순서에 맞추어 기록하고 그에 해당하는 무용의 작대도(作隊圖)를 한 장씩 그려 넣는 형식이다. 다른 하나는 악(樂)·가(歌)·무(舞)를 각각 기록하거나 병기(倂記)한 형식이다. 『시용무보』는 후자 형식의 기록물이다. 본 연구는 종묘일무의 춤사위 기록법을 『시용무보』의 술어를 중심으로 고찰하고자 한다. 『시용무보』의 「보태평지무」(保太平之舞)와 「정대업지무」(定大業之舞)는 성리학에서의 태극론(太極論)을 바탕으로 정립한 음양론 적용으로 문무(文舞)와 무무(武舞)가 좌우상제(左右相濟)를 이룬다. 필자는 『시용무보』에 대한 단계적 연구를 전개시켜 왔다. 그 결과 「보태평지무」와 「정대업지무」가 주역(周易)의 수리적(數理的) 음양법(陰陽法)과 음양적 수법(手法)에 의한 양극체제(兩極體制)의 형상으로 정리되었음을 발견하였다. 본 연구에서는 『시용무보』내의 일무(佾舞) 술어(術語)의 기록법이 양신음절(陽伸陰折)하는 수무(手舞) 사용법을 음양조화와 과불급(過不及)이 없는 중정(中正)한 양상으로 나타남을 규명하여 우리의 전통 악무기록법(樂舞記錄法)의 우수성을 밝히고자 한다. 본 연구작업은 전통 춤의 원형보존과 전통 악무에 뿌리를 둔 한국무용의 창작활동에 적합한 새로운 기록법 연구에 촉매적 역할을 다할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Siyongmubo(時用舞譜) is the records of the music and dance adapted from the new music that King Sejong made to honor the literary and military virtue of his forefathers for royal ancestral shrine music. There have been transmitted two ways of writing court dance. One is to write down the title of the dance and the dance passages in order of the dance and draw the dance illustration for each. The other is to write music, song and dance respectively or together. Siyongmubo is the record that was made following the latter way. In this research, the Korean traditional dance notation of court dance was studied centering around the dance passages of Siyongmubo. Botaepyeongjimu(保太平之舞) and Jeongdaeeopjimu(定大業之舞) in Siyongmubo took the yin-yang(陰陽) theory based on Sung Confucianism and the two dances are symmetrical. Through the research of several stages, I found that the two dances were created on the basis of mathematical yin-yang theory of the Chu divination. In this research I tried to clarify the superiority of Korean traditional dance notation by showing that the dance passages of Siyongmubo were made perfectly in the harmony of yin and yang. This research will help to develop a new dance notation that would be useful for preserving the original traditions and for the creations of new Korean dances rooted in traditional dances.
