본고는 최근 콘텐츠 시장의 기대를 한 몸에 받고 있는 웹소설에 대한 기존 논의를 탐색하고, 장르소설과 연관하여 웹소설의 매체성과 장르성을 분석한 다음, 그것의 소설문학으로서의 가능성을 타진해보고자 하였다. 웹소설에 대한 논의는 그것을 새로운 문화콘텐츠로 볼 것인가, 아니면 과거 인터넷소설의 계보를 잇는 소설장르의 진화로 볼 것인가의 문제로 요약된다. 이러한 논의들은 매체와 장르의 관계를 선형적이고 결정론적인 모델로 파악하는 측면이 있다. 본고에서는 이에 매체와 장르가 비선형적이고 중층결정적인 방식으로 상호작용한다는 입장에서 웹소설의 소설로서의 특성이나 향후의 문학 장르로서의 발전가능성을 연구해보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 장르소설과의 비교를 통해 웹소설의 특성들을 밝히려고 하였으며, 매체적 특성상 디테일적인 측면이 아니라 구조적인 측면에서 장르의 생성 및 발전이 이루어지고 있음을 구체적인 작품분석을 통해 증명하려 하였다. 장르융합과 장르결합이 장르소설과 웹소설에 공통적으로 드러나고 있음은 중간문학이라 일컬어지는 장르소설의 매개가 향후 웹소설이 새로운 문학장르로 부상하여 순문학, 장르문학, 웹소설의 상호발전적인 선순환구조를 형성할 수 있음을 암시하는 것으로 전망하였다.

This study aims to examine the possibilities that Korean web novels will make progress to a kind of literature, by analysing the media and genre of recent Web novels in Korea, through reviewing existing studies and comparison with Korean Genre Novels. The issues of Korean web novel can be summarized at the problem that it is new cultural contents or the evolution of novel genre, but last discussion have limitation of lineal and deterministic viewpoint. So, this article would study the aspects as a novel genre of Web novels and future development possibilities to be a new branch of literature, using non-lineal model in order to understand the over-determination of Web novels between its media and genre. Korean web novels are making more and many progress in the manner of structural combination of sub genre in the field of web novels, than the making detail which is intrinsic in the genre. As a result, Korean web novels are identified as the genre rather linguistic than visual, put into perspective that grow up new kind of literature and set up virtuous circle of cultural eco system from paper book to web contents by the mediation of genre novels called as middle-blow literature.
