누군가가 조성한 功德이 망자의 冥福에 영향을 미칠 수 있다면 세상의 질서유지에 보다 긍정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있을 것이다. 그런데 이런 것이 가능하다고 보는 것이 불교의 입장이다. 그리고 그 방법의 일환으로 제시한 것이 施食과 靈飯이며 『석문의범』 施食篇에는 奠施食등 4종의 시식과 常用靈飯등 2종의 영반이 소개되어 있다. 이들 의식의 단초는 『救拔焰口餓鬼陀羅尼經』에서 볼 수 있다. 경의 내용은 주로 生滅, 業報, 供養, 追善등에 관한 것이다. 生滅은 有爲法의 한계이고, 業報는 곧 因果法을 말한다. 供養은 至善을 향한 궤도수정이며, 追善은 공양등으로 조성한 선근공덕을 망자에게 회향하는 것이다. 시식과 영반은 이 가운데 공양과 추선을 좀 더 구체적으로 체계화 한 의식이다. 시식과 영반의 효시는 6세기경 梁武帝에 의해 탄생한 水陸齋이다. 그로부터 다시 분화 발달하여 4종의 시식과 2종의 영반이 성립된 것이다. 본고에서는 이들 시식과 영반의 특징을 개관하여 쓰임새에 어그러짐이 없도록 하고 궁극적 목적인 천도나 추모를 원만히 이룸에 일조하고자 하였다. 불교의식의 한글화라는 시대적 요구에 부응하기 위해서도 시식과 영반 전반에 걸친 개략적 고찰은 의미 있는 일이라 생각한다.
If somebody’s charitable deeds can make the soul of the deceased happy and peaceful, it will be a positive influence to maintain the order of society. From the view point of Buddhism, It could be possible. As a way to do it, Shisik and Yeongban have been introduced. There are four kinds of Shisik including Jeon-shisik and two kinds of Yeongban including Sangyong-Yeongban in 『Seokmuneubum』. There is the beginning of these ceremonies in 『Gubalyeom guaguidaranigyeong』. Those contents are about ‘birth and death’ ‘karma’ ‘Offering’ and ‘Requiem mass for the dead’. ‘Birth and Death’ is the limitation of Shifts and Changes. ‘Karma’ means the law of Cause and Effect. ‘Offering’ is the course correction for charitable deeds. ‘Requiem’ is the offering charitable deeds to the dead for the soul of the deceased. Shisik and Yeongban could be more concrete and systematic ‘Offering and Requiem mass’. The beginning of Shisik and Yeongban is ‘Suryukjae’ started in the age of Emperor Yang of Sui, 6C. and it has been developed to four kinds of Shisik and two kinds of Yeongban. In this paper, I summarized the characteristics of Shisik and Yeongban and want to correct the usage of the ceremonies. So help to giving a right ceremony to attain the fundamental goal of Rebirth in Buddhist paradise.
