The purpose of this study is to research and evaluate the transfer of Jejoongwon by Chosun government and Dr. Oliver R Avison(魚丕信, 1860-1956). There has been only a few researches about this subject so far. And this article newly covers several themes about the transfer of Jejoongwon with the historical documents of Presbyterian Historical Society, Philadelphia, USA. Jejoongwon was transferred from Chosun government to Presbyterian Church of USA (PCUSA), September 26th, 1894. Specially, Dr. Avison had done his best efforts to make the negotiation with Chosun government successful. Dr. Horace N. Allen(安連, 1858-1932) had done remarkable efforts in this process. There could be four major results through the transfer of Jejoongwon to PCUSA. First the Protestant mission in Korea could be much more successful than before. Second the systematic introduction of western medicine and medical education to Korea also could be possible. Third the relation between Chosun government and foreign missionaries could be closer than before. Last this case became the model of the plan which tried to make a university in Korea through the union between Chosun government and the PCUSA.
