1The (Anti-)Definiteness Effect in English Existentials as a Focus Construction

The current study aims to provide a feature-based account for the superficially contradictory constructions widely examined in syntax, known as the Definiteness Effect (DE) and the anti-Definiteness Effect (anti-DE). The DE is stated that the definite/ strong determiner phrases cannot serve as a notional subject. The anti-Definiteness Effect, however, is the case in which the definiteness effect vanishes, yielding the anti-Definiteness effect. In the anti-DE examples, the strong/specific/definite determiners are allowed to appear in the existential constructions (Milsark 1977, Ward and Birner 1995, McNally 1997, Abbott 1993, 1997, Keenan 2003, Hartmann 2013). In this paper, I argue that the anti-DE examples are an instance of Focus construction, which houses a bunch of syntactic as well as pragmatic features such as [focus, existence, knownness] (Bolinger 1977, Cann 2008), among others. It should be obvious that it is neither necessary nor accurate to dichotomize the determiners into Strong vs. Weak. The current proposal resolves this apparent contradiction between the DE and the anti-DE in a unified way, leading to the conclusion that there is no such thing as (anti-)DE. Furthermore, it may extend to other existential constructions such as HAVE-existentials (Quirk, et al 1976, Huddlestone and Pullum 2002, Tham 2004, Hong 2017, 2018). The ramifications of the present analysis include that there in there-existentials in English originates Spec-vP (Deal 2009) and the vP selects the Focus Projection whose most salient features include [focus, existence, knownness], among others.

The Korean double nominative construction shows many characteristics distinguished not only from subjectobject clauses but also from nominative complement constructions. Specifically, the initial NP of the construction exhibits properties that are attributed to a subject in terms of object to subject raising and caki binding. Embracing the traditional ideas such as Major Subject and the sentential predicate (Park 1981, Yoon 2004), the initial NP of the construction is suggested to be predicated by a sentential predicate. Therefore, in this approach, the NP is considered a grammatical relation that exists in addition to the subject, i.e., sentential specifier. This paper also shows how the proposal is neatly dealt with by Sign-Based Construction Grammar (Boas and Sag 2012).

Traditionally, the morpheme uy 'of' has been treated as a genitive case marker in Korean linguistics. It is thus natural in Korean linguistics that syntactic objects combined with uy are taken to be assigned genitive case. However, some generative grammarians including An (2012) and Hong (2013) have recently defied such tradition by claiming that uy is not a genitive marker but is a prenominal inflection in an allomorphic relation with the so-called adnominal ending (u)n, or by suggesting that those phrases marked with uy are adjuncts rather than specifiers or complements. This study critically examines their claims and analyses, and tries to find out their problems. In doing this, it makes efforts to support the traditional view from which uy is a genitive case marker.

Korean compound word piselkeci has the meaning of 'to put things (esp. grains) away so they don't get wet when it rains.' However, because it is rarely used these days, when its meaning is asked of, common responses are 'to wash dishes with rainwater' and 'to clean the surroundings with rain.' The paper demonstrates how the compound word piselkeci has its meaning, unlike the folk belief, from the perspective of cognitive semantics. The modifier pi 'rain' is extended to designate 'due to rain' through the metonymy EVENT FOR CAUSE. The profile determinant selkeci 'dish-washing' is extended to mean 'taking care of things after a certain event' by the HYPONYM FOR HYPERNYM metonymy and further to 'taking care of things after an event.' The paper also explains why most people misinterpret the meaning of piselkeci. They interpret pi 'rain' as an instrument or as an agent. In the former interpretation, pi is construed as 'rain water' through WHOLE FOR PART metonymy and, in the latter interpretation, it is construed as an inanimate agent which cleans the surroundings, which happens often when it rains.

5A Principled Explanation for Verb-Movements: V-v-to-T and T-to-C

The purpose of this study is to posit a principled explanation for the cross-linguistic puzzling phenomena of V-v-to-T and T-to-C movements found in English and French. For the explanation, Duality of interpretive properties and Phase Head are operated for the Agree valuation within the phase instead of the features of [Weak] and [Strong], admitting the next phase evaluation of look-ahead. For the further operations of verb (V)-movements, Chomsky's (2013, 2014) minimal search labeling algorithm (LA) interpreted in Interface and Matushansky's (2006) DM are adopted and slightly modified. Namely, headhead shared features as the label and m-merger for morphological processes are used in narrow syntax and interpreted in Interface. And Present Form as in -s, Past Form as in -ed, Modal Form such as can or do, Perfect Form have-ed, Progressive Form be-ing, and Passive Form be-ed are suggested to be merged in the v like causative make on the ground of slightly fixed Bare Approach. As a result, the Head Movement Constraint (HMC), do-support and affix-lowering are addressed without violating Extension Condition (EC) and c-command.

6Usage of 'COOL' and Its Meanings: From a Corpus-Based Cognitive Linguistic Approach

In our daily life, we often use temperature terms to convey not only literal meanings which show physical temperature but also figurative meanings as an important way of communication. Among the temperature terms, this paper focuses on 'cool' and aims to investigate its usage and meanings in depth through a corpus of American newspapers. First, 'cool' is dealt with statistically in terms of grammatical functions and semantic aspects as a quantitative analysis. Second, this paper analyzes the meanings of 'cool' found in the corpus of newspapers and explores how its literal meanings are metaphorically extended in detail as a qualitative analysis. In this way, this study explains that the meanings of 'cool' are derived from our conceptualization and this conceptualization is primarily based on human physical and cultural experience.

7Asian ESL Tutees' Construction of Peer-Tutoring Sessions in the Weekly Reflections

The pre-collegiate ESL tutor program at a small satellite campus of a large state university in the USA changed its orientation from a conversation partner program to the recitation program. In so doing, it required both the tutors and the (mostly Asian) tutees to submit weekly reports along with short reflections to each course instructor and to the ESL program coordinator The current action research study qualitatively explored the tutee reflections and investigated their discursive characterization of the tutoring sessions and/or the tutors in an attempt to examine if the change in the program direction was perceivably implemented duing the transition. The data for the study consisted of more than 210 weekly tutee reports for five intermediate and high-intermediate ESL courses that the program offered in spring 2009. The findings illustrated that the reflections generally constructed the peer-tutoring sessions as an academic event, but not so much as an intercultural encounter. In addition, the reflections also constructed the most appreciated qualities of the tutors as kindness in personalty and clarity in academic explanations, but many were lacking substantive details of their praises. The overall findings suggested that the change in the program direction was being implemented as intended albeit at some expense of intercultural awareness. Simultaneously, the findings also pointed to the need of clearer instructions for the academic orientation of the program, intercultural awareness, and more substantive reflections. Finally, the ethnographic background and the findings demonstrated that the pre-collegiate ESL tutor program had its own challenges that were identifiably distinct from those in a tutor program at college writing centers or in EFL peer-tutor programs in an EFL context.

8A Study on Motivational Differences between Korean Middle and High School Students in Learning English

This study explores whether there are any differences between the scores of amotivation, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation of a middle school group and a high school group. It examines the effects of two factors on the difference in the scores of each motivation subtype: whether students receive private education, and when students first start learning English. T-test results indicate higher scores for the middle school group in all the subtypes than for the high school group. Statistical significance was not obtained in support of the effect of private education. The group that started learning English in the third grade of elementary school showed a higher amotivation mean score than the group that started in the first or second grade. Also, amotivation was proven to be a viable variable to group subjects with in addition to extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation, supporting the motivation system proposed in Selfdetermination Theory. These results imply that teachers need to understand motivation as a dynamic construct and attempt to promote it through groupspecific approaches in English classrooms.
