1A Case for Critical EAP in Korea in the Era of the 4th Industrial Revolution

This article is to consider the theoretical positions and practices that English for academic purposes (EAP) is believed to have to adopt in view of the post-structuralist conception of language as discourse, and of the two mega-trends of globalization and the 4th industrial revolution, which are suspiciously expected to bring forth dimensions of dehumanization with excessive pursuit of efficiency and monetary profit. To ameliorate the gloomy expectation, it proposes that EAP be able to contribute not only to the improvement of students' academic English competencies but also to the ethicalization of society, educational institutions, and classrooms. It then discusses cases of critical EAP reported in the literature as having blazed an indisputable path to ethicalization, so that EAP studies and practices in EFL settings such as Korea may estimate and pursue their own appropriate ways to ethicalize their own locales.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the students' experiences in Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in freshman's College English Course in Seminary. In particular, the study was to explore students' perceptions and satisfaction of TBLT implemented courses. TBLT is one of the communicative language teaching method which focuses on using authentic material to carry out meaningful tasks in order to develop learner's target language. This research invites two freshman English classes (Theology and Christian Education Major) implementing TBLT approaches and examine their prior experiences in English learning at the beginning of the course and their experiences in a TBLT approach at the end of the course. Two surveys were performed for this and focus interview was also added to hear more about students' underlying thoughts. The survey result showed that in terms of their prior experiences in English learning, both majors did not display significant difference and they both felt they weren't competent in productive skills such as speaking and writing. Both groups said they had experienced communicative language teaching method and half of them felt good about it but the other half felt negative about such approach. Post survey revealed that the new way of using TBLT for college students were very positive for these students. They understood the value of TBLT and generally satisfied with this approach. However, there was a significant difference between Theology and Christian Education majors with regard to their satisfaction of collaborative work. While Theology students were highly content with working together despite of the different levels of English skills existed in each group, Christian Education found it somewhat unproductive when the group was formed with different levels and individuals with different motives. This leads to next step for English instructors to consider when implementing TBLT and more suggestions and recommendations are discussed. All in all, TBLT positively influenced students' academic achievement as well as their affective factors in English learning but must be dealt with carefulness to meet individual needs.

In an effort to explore the trends of ESP research this study analyzed the articles which were published in the English for Specific Purposes (ESPj) from 2000 to 2018. This study has shown the characteristics and changes of research articles with respect to disciplines, topics, and methodologies. This analysis has produced some findings about research trends in ESPj. Recent articles show that genre and corpus analyses on the academic and occupational writings were favored over other methods and ESP domains. Next, qualitative research methods have recently been favored over quantitative ones. These results indicate that ESP researchers have been less concerned with materials and program development which were based on learners' needs. As ESP is a learner-centered approach, they need to pay attention to be more concerned with teaching and learning than academic writings. Furthermore, ESP researchers have used rather a limited qualitative method such as an ethnographic method and case study.

The paper aims to make suggestions on improving the criminal investigation for foreigners in Korea through the education of interpreters. The study was conducted to identify the characteristics of falsehood in the speech of specific language speakers, wich will be key contents in training interpreters. For the study of this paper, the native speakers of Chinese, which currently represents the highest occupancy rate and crime rate in Korea, were selected as subjects, and the characteristics of their false speech were studied. The experiment found that the subjects showed more distinctive characteristics of falsehood when answering in Chinese (L1) than in English (L3) and Korean (L2), and that the linguistic features of native speakers were most noticeable in the increase in the height of their voices. Based on this, if legal and phonetic education is conducted on interpreters, we can expect to strengthen the status of interpreters as investigators' assistants beyond simple interpretation in the course of the interrogation. Also, the authenticity of the foreign suspect's answers can be revealed more accurately, and so a quicker and more efficient investigation of the foreign suspect can be expected.

The present study aims at analyzing the cultural content in high school English I textbooks based on 2015 Revised Curriculum, using three categories: cultural subjects, cultural backgrounds, and cultural types. The findings of the study are 1) the textbooks dealt with the cultural subjects in a different rate ranged from 5 to 11; 2) in terms of cultural backgrounds, none of the textbooks include cultural comparison, and British/American culture was least dealt with in the textbooks; and 3) when it comes to cultural types, behavioral culture was included in the textbooks much less than mental culture and material culture. In general, it is required to be taken into consideration, when developing English textbooks, that various and balanced cultural content is need to be included in the textbook in terms of cultural subjects, backgrounds, and types in order to help EFL learners enhance their intercultural competence.
