This article examines dreams in an array of Chinese films, ranging from popular to modernist, that emerged in several transformative historical moments from the post-May Fourth period of the 1920s through the Reform Era of the 1980s. Through the contextualisation of film dreams, this article explores how oneiric representation waxed and waned in relation to the changing status of realism as aesthetic orthodoxy in the Chinese context. During the journey of emergence, deprivation, and return on the Chinese screen, film dreams become socialised and allegorised in a particular period as a symptom or index of a broader historical reality to which they respond or that they reflect. This article therefore argues that film dreams touched upon the kernel of historic situations and ideology in a way that had not yet reached a universal moment in realist representation.

2Marshall R. Pihl and His Views on How to Enrich Korean Literature in Translation

Marshall R. Pihl (1933-1995) was a leading American translator and scholar in the field of Korean literature. He translated major works of modern Korean fiction, taught Korean literature at US universities, and wrote book reviews and articles about Korean literature and/in translation. In this article, Pihl's views of how to translate modern Korean fiction are discussed in detail by comparing his translations of two Korean short stories―Kim Sungok's “Soul 1964 nyon kyoul” (“Seoul: 1964 Winter”) and Chon Kwangyong's “Kkoppittan Ri” (“Kapitan Ri”) with his self-revisions thereof. The two initial translations were published in a Korean periodical in 1966 and 1971, respectively, and the self-revisions appeared in a 1993 anthology of modern Korean stories. It is argued that a detailed comparison of the initial translations and self-revisions reveal not only Pihl's evolution as a translator, but also provide an insight into how to enrich Korean literature in translation. This study also discusses Pihl's approach to translation and his qualities as a cultural translator.

The relationship between the government and academics has been a contentious issue in the history of Korean archaeology. The government and archaeologists mainly established their relationships around three issues: the process for granting authorization for archaeological excavations, government archaeological institutions, and the funding structure of archaeological research. These spaces had a colonial origin, and entailed power relationships between the government and archaeologists. The defeat of the imperial power, Japan, in 1945 entailed dramatic changes. This paper claims that the decolonization of those spaces ushered in new dynamics that allowed for new forms of autonomy for archaeologists, continuing in the post-Liberation period. However, since 1968, the government's greater involvement has affected the direction of research performed in the field, without completely destroying said autonomy.

The encounter between Confucianism and western learning is often portrayed as a confrontation between Confucianism, associated with passivity and hierarchy, and the western philosophical tradition, connected with independence and rationality. This bifurcating tendency is pronounced in the historiography of nineteenth-century Korean history, when Koreans established westernstyle schools and published modern textbooks. This article is neither a defense of Confucianism nor an endorsement of the western model, but a proposal to reexamine this dichotomization that is predominant in current scholarship and the assumption that the two were irreconcilable. A comparison of Korean readers demonstrates that the process of the incorporation of western ideas was less one of linear progress based on the displacement of Confucianism than an amalgamation of different ideas and values. Thus, from a more broadly defined Confucian framework emerged a new sense of civil duties that allowed intellectuals and government bureaucrats to discuss nationalism, citizenship, and the public sphere.

Through an examination of copies of the Analects excavated since the 20th century, particularly the materials unearthed from the Haihunhou 海昏侯 Tomb, this paper attempts to understand the popularization of Confucianism in the Western Han and explore the possibility of the existence of a Qi Lun 齊論 (Qi version of the Analects). Archaeological findings have shown that during the reigns of Emperors Xuan and Yuan (74-49 BC and 48-33 BC), the Analects was popularized throughout the territory of the empire and read widely by different social groups, from members of the royal family to local bureaucrats. Moreover, the discovery of the chapter “Zhi Dao” 智道 in the Haihunhou Analects provided conclusive evidence for the existence of the Qi Lun mentioned in the Hanshu 漢書. The contents of the same chapter also appear on slip 73EJT22:6 in the Jianshui Jinguan Hanjian 肩水金關漢簡, indicating that the Qi Lun had not been lost. Furthermore, my analysis of the contents of the excavated manuscript of the Qi Lun sheds new light on the study of variant versions of the Analects, and new terms such as zhi dao 知道 and ziai 自愛 found in the text will stimulate new academic research on this work.
