1한국어 단어모음의 음성학적 기반연구

The purpose of this study was to investigate and quantitatively describe the acoustic characteristics of current Korean monophthongs. Recordings were made of 33 men and 27 women producing the vowels /i, e, ε, a, e, o, u, i/ in a carrier phrase "This character is ___." A listening test was conducted in which 19 participants judged each vowel. F1, F2, and F3 were measured from the vowels judged as intended vowels by more than 17 people from the listening test. Analysis of formant data shows some interesting results including the undeniable confirmation of the 7-vowel system in modern Korean. It turns out that quite different sounding Korean vowels and English vowels happen to have very similar formant measurements. Also the difference between "citation-form reading" vs. "natural utterance reading" is discussed.

This study investigated the perception of emotional voices by transplanting some or all of the prosodic aspects, i.e. pitch, duration, and intensity, of the utterances produced with emotional voices onto those with normal voices and vice versa. Listening evaluation by 24 raters revealed that prosodic effect was greater than segmental & vocal quality effect on the preception of the emotion. The degree of influence of prosody and that of segments & vocal quality varied according to the type of emotion. As for fear, prosodic elements had far greater influence than segmental & vocal quality elements whereas segmental and vocal elements had as much effect as prosody on the perception of happy voices. Different amount of contribution to the perception of emotion was found among prosodic features with the descending order of pitch, duration and intensity. As for the length of the utterances, the perception of emotion was more effective with long utterances than with short utterances.

The purpose of this study is 1) to investigate the phoneme inventories and phonological processes of cochlear implant(CI) children and 2) to describe their utterances using narrow phonetic transcription method. All ten subjects had more than 2 year-experience with CI and showed more than 85 % open-set sentence perception abilities. Average consonant accuracy was 81.36 % and it was improved up to 87.41% when distortion errors were not counted. They showed similar phonological processing patterns to HA or normal hearing children in some way as well as different phonological processing patterns from HA or normal hearing children. The prominent distortion error pattern was weakening of consonants. Every subject had his/her idiosyncratic error pattern that demanded his/her own individualized therapy program.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the exact locus of the frequency effect in speech production. Experiment 1 addressed the question as to whether the word frequency effect arise from the stage of lemma selection. A picture-word interference task was performed to test the significance of interactions between the effects of target frequency, distractor frequency and semantic relatedness. There was a significant interaction between the distractor frequency and the semantic relatedness and between the target and the distractor frequency. Experiment 2 examined whether the word frequency effect is attributed to the lexeme level which represent phonological information of words. A methodological logic applied to Experiment 2 was the same as that of Experiment 1. There was no significant interaction between the distractor frequency and the phonological relatedness. These results demonstrate that word frequency has influence on the processes involved in selecting a correct lemma corresponding to an activated lexical concept in speech production.

Japanese is a language having intonations, which are indicated by the relative differences in pitch heights and the accentual phrases (APs) are placed according to the changes of the accents while a break occurs on a boundary of the APs. Although a break can be predicted by using J-ToBI, which is a rule-based or statistical approach, it is very difficult to predict a break exactly due to the flexibility. Therefore, in this paper, a method which can enhance the quality of synthesized speech by reducing the errors in predicting break indices (BI), are proposed. The method is to use a new definition for the phonetic symbols, which combine the phonetic values of Japanese words with the accents information. Since a stream of defined phonetic symbols includes the information on the changes in intonations, the BI can be easily predicted by dividing the intonation phrase (IP) into several APs. As a result of an experiment, the accuracy of break generations was 98% and the proposed method contributed itself to enhance the naturalness of synthesized speeches.

In this paper, we carried out recognition experiments for noisy speech having various levels of car noise and output of an audio system using the speech interface. The speech interface consists of three parts: pre-processing, acoustic echo canceller, post-processing. First, a high pass filter is employed as a pre-processing part to remove some engine noises. Then, an echo canceller implemented by using an FIR-type filter with an NLMS adaptive algorithm is used to remove the music or speech coming from the audio system in a car. As a last part, the MMSE-STSA based speech enhancement method is applied to the out of the echo canceller to remove the residual noise further. For recognition experiments, we generated test signals by adding music to the car noisy speech from Aurora 2 database. The HTK-based continuous HMM system is constructed for a recognition system. Experimental results show that the proposed speech interface is very promising for robust speech recognition in a noisy car environment.

The speech recognizer in general operates in noisy acoustical environments. Many research works have been done to cope with the acoustical variations. Among them, the multiple-HMM model approach seems to be quite effective compared with the conventional methods. In this paper, we consider a multiple-model approach combined with the model compensation method and investigate the necessary number of the HMM model sets through noisy speech recognition experiments. By using the data-driven Jacobian adaptation for the model compensation, the multiple-model approach with only a few model sets for each noise type could achieve comparable results with the re-training method.

It is reported that the segmental feature based recognition system shows better results than conventional feature based system in the previous studies. On the other hand, the various studies of combining neural network and hidden Markov models within a single system are done with expectations that it may potentially combine the advantages of both systems. With the influence of these studies, tandem approach was presented to use neural network as the classifier and hidden Markov models as the decoder. In this paper, we applied the trend information of segmental features to tandem architecture and used posterior probabilities, which are the output of neural network, as inputs of recognition system. The experiments are performed on Aurora2 database to examine the potentiality of the trend feature based tandem architecture. From the results, the proposed system outperforms on very low SNR environments. Consequently, we argue that the trend information on tandem architecture can be additionally used for traditional MFCC features.

In this paper, we introduce a phone vector discrete HMM (PVDHMM) that decodes a phone sequence string, and demonstrates the applicability to spoken document retrieval. The PVDHMM treats a phone recognizer or large vocabulary continuous speech recognizer (LVCSR) as a vector quantizer whose codebook size is equal to the size of its phone set. We apply the PVDHMM to decode the phone sequence strings and compare the outputs with those of a continuous speech recognizer (CSR). Also we carry out spoken document retrieval experiment through PVDHMM word spotter on the phone sequence strings which are generated by phone recognizer or LVCSR and compare its results with those of retrieval through the phone-based vector space model.

In this paper we proposed a modified reliability function for improving bimodal speaker identification (BSI) performance. The convectional reliability function, used by N. Fox[1], is extended by introducing an optimization factor. We evaluated the proposed method in BSI domain. A BSI system was implemented based on GMM and it was tested using VidTIMIT database. Through speaker identification experiments we verified the usefulness of our proposed method. The experiments showed the improved performance, i.e., the reduction of error rate by 39%.
