This study aims to develop the constructs for evaluating team presentations performed by undergraduate international students in Korea. To achieve the goal, this study reviews related research and sets the criteria to analyze the problems of team presentations performed in Korean by undergraduate international students. Through this analysis we got to know which problems they were making. They were failing to reorganize the resources they had referenced and to organize the contents into one. And errors or mistakes of grammar and spelling were found often in their PPT files, and the editing styles of the PPTs were not consistent. Moreover, their performances were not unlike their PPT files. One made a good presentation but the other students just recited the script without interaction with the audience. Moreover, they could not operate the Q&A part and lead the discussion well, and components for wrapping up the presentation also were omitted frequently. After the analysis, this study conducted a survey with 23 Korean language educators asking about the validity of the construct and description of the survey. Based on the collected feedback, the construct list has been modified primarily, and carried out a second survey with an expert group. Based on their opinion, the final construct list was fine-tuned. The purpose of this study is to compare the aspects of acculturation and the acculturative strategies of Chinese, Vietnamese, Mongolian, Japanese international students in Korea and to explore the correlation between acculturative strategies and acculturation as well as between acculturative factors and acculturation. The analysis revealed (i) that all of the international students from four countries adapted well to Korean culture in order of contentment to the collegiate life, personal factors, Korean living culture, social factors, Korean classes. Further, (ii) frequently used acculturative strategies of Chinese, Mongolian students were in the order of separation, marginalization, and assimilation while the most often used acculturative ones of Vietnamese and Japanese students were in the order of marginalization, separation and assimilation. In addition, (ⅲ) the acculturation of international students from four countries showed a significant correlation with personal factors, Korean living culture, contentment to the collegiate life, and (iv) the acculturation of Chinese students showed a positive correlation with separation strategy. In contrast, there was a negative correlation between the marginalization strategy and the acculturation of Mongolian and Japanese students. (Kyung Hee University)

This study explored how a particular social media can be used to supplement elementary-level Korean language course in the US public university. The researchers administered a survey measuring students' patterns and habits of social media use. Based on the survey results, researchers designed six different types of learning materials and uploaded them regularly to Instagram throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, a survey was conducted to find out students' satisfactory level. From the 44 students' responses, the study found out that using Instagram 1) is more accessible to students than any other learning management system, 2) is fun and students are willing to participate, 3) increased the target language exposure and authentic language use, 4) increased interaction between teachers, students and even other native speakers, and 5) is helpful to improve listening and other language skills. The purpose of this study is to deal with vocabulary in KFL. As a result of this study, learners learned vocabulary on average 43 points through contextual inference and introduction of the class to activate background knowledge. In particular, the implicit method showed the highest learning rate of 52 points, and the thematic method had a 41 point-learning rate. In contrast, the semantic method was the lowest with a 25 point-learning rate. There was no significant difference in the improvement rate of upper vocabulary learners, but in the case of the lower learner, there was significant difference in the improvement rate. The difference was not significant in the post-test relative gain rate of upper learners, but there was significant in lower learners. In the delayed test relative gain rate, the difference was significant in all groups. There was correlation between vocabulary difficulty and score, but there was no correlation with the thematic method. And there was no correlation between vocabulary difficulty, improvement rate and relative gain rate in all three classes. However, content understanding, lexical grade, improvement rate, and relative gain rate showed a significant correlation. (Cyber Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)

This study is designed to find out how the recognition of the listener's role affects listening in Korean language learning. We assumed that recognizing the role of the listener can focus on important information. To confirm our assumption, we conducted an experiment on 37 Koreans and 32 KSLs. Koreans and KSLs were divided into two groups depending on whether or not they recognize the role of the listener. The results showed that Koreans and KSLs who recognized the role of the listener were better at listening to important information, and Koreans who recognized the role of the listener were better at judging important information. This study suggests that the role of listeners as context apply to Korean listening education. (Seoul National University·Soongsil University)

The purpose of this study is to prepare the basis for a more objective evaluation of oral fluency by comparing speech patterns of Korean native speakers and L2 Korean learners. For this purpose, the current study focused on the analysis of speech materials of the 21st century Sejong spoken corpus and Korean learner corpus. We compared the oral fluency of Korean native speakers and Korean learners based on speech rate, pause, and discourse markers. The results show that the pattern of Korean learners is different to that of Korean native speakers in all aspects of speech rate, pause, and discourse markers; even though proficiency of Korean leaners show increase, they could not reach the oral fluency level of Korean native speakers. At last, based on these results of the analysis, we added suggestions for setting the evaluation criteria of oral fluency of Korean learners. (Yonsei University)

The purpose of this study is to examine Korean teachers' needs in in-service teacher training and variables related to their needs. This study was conducted with teachers from Korean language centers in Korean universities. The following three research questions were investigated: (1) What are the teachers' experiences of Korean language teaching and in-service teacher training? (2) What are the teachers' needs and expectations for the content and components of in-service education programs? Are there any disparity between teachers' needs and institutional needs? (3) What are the variables to be considered in designing an effective in-service teacher education program? In order to answer the research questions, a survey was developed and distributed to university Korean language institutions and Korean language teachers. The results indicated that both institutions and teachers are highly aware of the importance of the need for in-service teacher training. The results also suggested that a more teacher-centered, bottom-up approach should be implemented for successful outcomes of teacher education programs. Based on the results, this study offers a summary of the need for in-service teacher training and variables (both individual teacher variables and environmental variables) to be considered in designing the content and components of a teacher education program. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of text modification by comparing differences in Korean reading comprehension levels that arise from differences in vocabulary levels in texts. This study intends to use simplified texts with the vocabulary difficulty adjusted differently from the original text to measure reading comprehension levels of Korean learners and analyze the result. To measure reading comprehension, the researcher divided 55 Korean learners of intermediate to advanced level of fluency into two groups; the control group read the original text and the treatment group read a simplified text in which complex vocabulary were substituted with easier words of medium difficulty. Then the two groups were tested with the same questionnaire to measure comprehension levels of each group. The result showed that the groups that read simplified texts scored higher than the control group; this suggests that the reading comprehension level was increased in the treatment group. The experiment confirmed that unknown vocabulary density has direct impact on Korean reading comprehension. The result shows that the proportion of unknown vocabulary should be reduced for meaning-focused reading. It also demonstrates that comprehension of the learner was enhanced with lexical simplification rather than structural simplification i.e. simplification of grammar or sentences. Thus, diverse reading materials adjusted to the learners' level of fluency should be developed to enable reading for learning Korean. By reducing the burden of understanding the meaning of each vocabulary, learners will be able to achieve the initial goal of reading. (Korea University)

The purpose of this study is to contrast the patterns of realization and understanding of refusal speech acts between Korean and Thai learners. This study intends to answer the following questions: (1) Do Koreans and Thai learners perform refusal speech acts differently? (2) Do Koreans and Thai learners understand refusal speech acts differently? A DCT and a follow-up interview were conducted to collect data of two groups of 30 native Korean speakers and 30 native Thai speakers. For research question 1, we analyzed the refusal strategy and provided reasons given by Koreans and Thai learners depending on the context. For research question 2, we ran a chi-squared test on the elements of the follow-up interviews, such as the weight of burden of refusing, and whether the participant would actually refuse or not. The differences between the refusal strategies of the two groups could be categorized by the preceding inducing speech act. In refusing a request, the difference was prominent in the apologizing strategy, whereas in refusing a suggestion, the difference was mainly in the direct refusal strategy. When refusing an invitation, the most evident difference was the number of refusal strategies employed. When providing an explanation of refusal to people with high social status, Koreans gave more specific reasons for refusals, whereas Thai learners tended to use more vague reasons. Moreover, when refusing an invitation, Koreans primarily mentioned the relationship, and Thai learners showed the spirit of Greng Jai. When asked the weight of burden of refusing, Koreans felt pressured to refuse a request from people with high social status, and a suggestion or invitation from people with high level of intimacy while Thai learners found it highly difficult to make a refusal in all cases. In answering whether they would actually refuse or not, Koreans tried not to make a refusal to people with high level of intimacy, and such a trend was not evident among the Thai. This study can help us better understand the learner's pragmatic failure, and serve as a basis in establishing a curriculum for teaching speech acts. The Buckwheat Season, evaluated as the best of Lee Hyo-seok's literature, is one of the short stories that represent Korean literature. However, vivid literary expressions such as lyrical and beautiful depictions, figurative expressions and dialects, which show the Korean beauty, rather make learners have difficulty and become a factor that fails in reading comprehension. Thus, it is necessary to revise and present the text modified for the learners' language level. The methods of revising a literary text include the revision of linguistic elements such as cryptic vocabulary or sentence structure and the revision of the composition of the text, e.g. suggestion of characters or plot, or insertion of illustration. The methods of revising the language of the text can be divided into methods of simplification and detailing. However, in the process of revising the text, many depend on the adapter's subjective perception, not revising it with objective criteria. This paper revised the text, utilizing < Analysis Corpus for Novel Vocabulary Studies > by the Academy of Korean Studies, < Korean Language Education Vocabulary Content Development >, < Developing Content for Grammar Expressions in Korean Language Education > and the < Accepted Standard Korean Language Education Model > by the National Institute of Korean Language to secure objectivity in revising the text.
