The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' questions in the actual general Korean classroom for academic purposes and identify types of questions. The results of the question analysis by type identified 713 teacher's questions in total: echoic questions made up 41% while epistemic questions were 19.3% and expended question turned out to make up 39.7%. 'Comprehension check questions' were 29%, which was a major part in the echoic question. 'Referential questions' were a major part in the epistemic question. Also, the research discovered that 'knowledge integration' questions held the largest majority in expended questions. Since the teacher-led lecture was often conducted in the problem-presentation stage, the percentage of Echoic question was high; and moreover, the problem-solving stage promoted to come up with more improved solutions of the problem. In the outcome and presentation stage, it was discovered that the questions aimed to check understanding of content in the subject and expand thoughts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies for teacher's questions by phase and further conduct research on the interaction between learners and teacher's questions in the future. This study examined the influence of lexical factors on verbal Eojeol recognition. To meet the goal, forty-five L2 Korean learners and twenty-two Korean native speakers took Eojeol decision tasks measured with the lexical factors such as 'number of strokes', 'number of consonants and vowels', 'number of syllables', 'number of morphemes', 'whole Eojeol frequency', 'root frequency', 'first-syllable-sharing frequency', and 'number of dictionary meanings.' As a result, 'whole Eojeol frequency' was the most effective factor to predict Eojeol recognition reaction time for native speakers and L2 learners, which supports the full-list model. Other lexical factors influencing Eojeol recognition reaction time in L2 learners were different following their proficiency level. The purpose of this study is to analyze Language Achievement tests of King Sejong Institute which have been carried out from 2014 to 2017. Language Achievement tests of King Sejong Institute has been developed since 2014, the test is operated in 99 institutes of 46 countries now (As of first half of 2017) When this study analyzes the result of evaluation for 4 years, it was found that the number of nations enforcing the evaluation, institutes and examinees has continued its growth. In the early stage of evaluation, the examinees from Asian regions take up majority but the recent proportion of European region is getting bigger gradually. In addition, only beginner level evaluation was carried out in the early stage but recently its range is expanded to the intermediate level. This Language Achievement tests of King Sejong Institute can be utilized very valuable data which can diagnose the present and future of oversea Korean language education. In order to elevate public confidence as Korean language achievement test, this study suggested, first, increase the feedback effect of evaluation, second, establish the learning history information of examinees along with the test scores, third, conduct the training for evaluator in order to increase the validity and reliability of the evaluation, fourth, seek to utilize the results of the achievement test. This research presents principles and models for developing textbooks for business Korean to be used at the King Sejong Institutes overseas targeting Korean learners with vocational purposes. The principles of the business textbooks are based on research by Hyunjin Kim et al. (2018) which contains needs analysis and results from analyzing textbooks. The principles were also extracted from investigating previous researches relating to business Korean and characteristics of teaching and learning Korean with vocational purposes. The principles can be summarized to 1) connectivity with general purpose Korean textbooks of “Sejong Korean”, 2) centrality with the users, and 3) improving communication skills for vocations. Additionally, textbooks based on these principles were tested in August and September of 2018 in China and Korea; usefulness of the textbooks were then examined by experts in Korean education. The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic elements that can promote academic literacy in terms of content-based instructions for KSL learners. In order to study the characteristics of learning languages for subjects, focus was given to the framework of systematic functional linguistics that has been extensively used in ELL teaching and learning research in the United States and Australia. History, which is taught in all classes and classified as a required course, was the subject of analysis. From the history curriculum, the elementary school level texts “Social Studies 5-2” and “Social Studies 6-1” were chosen for the analysis. Based on the results, we can come to the following conclusions. First, history textbooks are divided into narrative and analytical explanatory sub-genres based on their content, and there are differences in the factors that need to be focused on to find the main information. Second, the vocabulary of history textbooks should focus on the use of verbs which comprehend material processes. Particularly, learners should pay attention to the differences in meaning between low-frequency expressions. We hope that the results of this study will have a positive effect on history subject learning for learners in the “Adaptive Korean Course” and will help establish direction in terms of building curriculum contents for KSL learners. The purpose of this study was to identify the necessity of research for increasing French language learners and to examine their use of listening strategies according to their proficiency as a basic study for their continuous learning and communication skills. In the case of French language Korean learners, both the beginner and intermediate learners used the upper cognitive strategy most frequently. However, the cognitive strategy, which has been mentioned as a frequently used strategy in previous studies, was found to be the least used in this study. This finding can be attributed to differences in mores and mastery of prior studies and research subjects. The cognitive strategy was lower in both the beginner and intermediate levels, but the level of use increased significantly in the intermediate level compared to the beginner level, showing only statistically significant differences in the usage patterns according to the proficiency level among the four listening strategies. This study examined the language acquisition of children from Chinese families in Korea under the bilingual background of Korean and Chinese, focusing on pronunciation and vocabulary. First, in the analysis of pronunciation acquisition, children correctly realized the lenition, aspirated sound, glottalization, palatalization, nasalization, and liquidization while the realization of pronunciation rules for unfamiliar words was low. There were also errors caused when the application principles of pronunciation were not accurately understood or they were not partially acquired. Second, in the analysis of vocabulary acquisition, the acquisition of receptive vocabulary was in the order of verb, noun, and adjective while they clearly understood vocabulary used in the actual relationships with school, family, and peers. In the acquisition of productive vocabulary, they showed the 'meaning-centered principle' of learning the meaning of vocabulary first and then learning its form afterwards. The amount of study and exposure to Korean language had effects on the improvement of vocabulary. Even though this study focused on the errors and characteristics in the acquisition process of Korean pronunciation and vocabulary for children from Chinese families in Korea, it could not clearly find out which one would have greater effects on the acquisition of Korean language. However, lots of exchanges and experiences with surrounding environment and peer group had great effects on the language acquisition and language acquisition transfer of children. The purpose of this study is to compare the difference in the interactions between beginning language learners and heritage learners on their forms based on the interaction hypothesis. In this study, three types of information gap activities were used to analyze Language Related Episodes (LREs) while investigating the interaction patterns in language use between four pairs (eight learners) of foreign learners and four pairs (eight learners) of English-speaking heritage learners. The result indicated that foreign learners had a high focus on form during interaction. In particular, they had a tendency to focus on vocabulary rather than grammar, and they conducted self-repair by examining and mostly adjusting their speech to postposition and tense. However, in the problem-solving process, they showed a limited ability in interaction, and thus directly asked others to settle the problem or resorted to using English due to their lack of ability to employ various communication strategies. However, heritage learners had a relatively low focus on form compared to foreign learners. Yet, they also focused more on vocabulary rather than grammar and conducted self-repair in interaction, especially for vocabulary. In addition, they were skillful at using various communication strategies such as indirect expressions, use of alternative words, evasion, and delaying, to expand speech and prevent communication breakdown. The purpose of this study is to propose a plan for future developments of the Korean language textbooks for overseas by conducting the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) of the Korean language textbooks for overseas. For this purpose, this study analyse and evaluate the Korean language textbooks for overseas and the researches for developing Korean language textbooks for overseas. In this study, we have the IPA of the Korean language textbooks from the total of 158 surveys that were collected from teachers who teach Korean at King Sejong Institute and overseas university. The survey conducted about the Korean textbooks regarding the following questionnaires: 1) integrated and separated textbooks, 2) textbooks by learners' variables, 3) teaching materials by media type, 4) supplementary teaching materials, 5) diffusion and support of textbooks. The result of this survey found that supporting for the separated textbooks is needed, and there is a high demand for localized textbooks considering local characteristics. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that King Sejong Institute has a high demand for textbooks that can be downloaded from the web despite most of institutes are highly satisfied with paper textbooks. For the supplementary textbooks, it was found that vocabulary learning materials were needed for the King Sejong school students and additional reading materials for overseas college learners needed to be developed. We also found that it is necessary to support not only the development of textbooks but also smooth and efficient diffusion. Most grading scales of Korean language proficiency tests are based on existing grading scales that are not empirically verified. The purpose of this study is to develop an empirically verified scale descriptor. The 'Performance data-driven approach' that is suggested by Fulcher (1987) was used to develop the detailed description of characteristics for each level of performance. This study is focused on the functional phase of speech samples analysis (coding data) to create explanatory categories of discourse skills into which individual observations of speech phenomena can be scored. The speech samples that were collected through this study demonstrated stages of speech that can be a foundation of a grading scale. The data used in the study was collected from 23 native speakers of Korean. Speech samples were recorded from simulated speaking tests using the 'REFUSAL' task, and transcribed for analysis. The transcript was analyzed using discourse analysis. The result showed that the 'REFUSAL' task needs to go through four functional phases in actual communication. Furthermore, this study found specific and detailed explanatory categories of discourse competence based on the actual native speaker's speech data.
