This study takes position that speaking test should take account of context and concrete interlocutors of speaking task because people normally speak not in a vacuum but with real interlocutors and concrete purpose. Therefore the results of speaking test could predict test takers deal with real situation with sociolinguistic skills. The purpose of this study is to find the construct of sociolinguistic competence analyzing discourse made by different level of proficiency in Korean. The speech act in this study is 'apologize' and 'request' which is relatively uncomfortable than other speech acts. As a result beginners could not use proper title of interlocutors and preliminaries to mitigate the burden of making a request and apologize. However advanced learners of Korean call interlocutors with proper name and they can put preliminaries before they say what they want. This study prove that those two items could have possibility to be the constructs of speaking tests. There should be more study to back up this results to be solid construct of speaking tests in the future. (Honam University)

The purpose of this study is to analyze tendencies on how language education policies for students learning multi-cultural backgrounds have been changed and to seek for the development direction afterwards. For doing this, this study examined France and Japan and America and Australia in order to figure out how foreign language education policies for them have been enforced through literature reviews. The language education for students learning multi-cultural backgrounds have started over a decade in the Korea society. Examining how language education policies have been changed can be a reference material to seek for tendencies on how language education policies should be developed. Flows of them from 2006 when multi-cultural education plans are presented to 2019 were divided into four periods and this study examined its flows. The first period was a beginning period(2006 to 2008) when there were interests in education for children of multi-cultural families. Korean education started in each school unit and seeking for the support direction in Office of Education were main. The second period was a preparation period(2009 to 2011) to seek for tendencies of standardized Korean education and to materialize the support system of Korean education under mid and long term plans. The third period was a development period(2012 to 2016) when the state-dominated standardized Korean (KSL) education course was notified and standard textbooks were developed and supplied. The fourth period was an advanced period(2017 to present) when notification on the revised education course and textbook revision and study capability reinforcement and expansion of multi-cultural education were strengthened. As this study examined these flows, it will suggest the future direction on how education policies including language education for students learning multi-cultural backgrounds should be enforced. According to Shohamy (2006), much of the language policy is realized through a variety of indirect actions and practices that serve as de facto policies that can override and contradict existing policies and create alternative policy. Language tests, widely used as mechanisms in policy implementation, play a role for turning language ideologies into linguistic practices. In other words, language tests have acted as mediators to manipulate de facto language policy. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean language proficiency tests for immigrants are used as mechanisms for affecting de facto language policies. Newspaper articles, government documents, and related websites were explored to understand that different Korean tests were positioned for high-stakes decisions for immigrants in such social domains as the government, school, and workplaces. It was found that the actual use of the tests brought not only intended and unintended consequences but also detrimental effects on the test stakeholders. (Chung-Ang University)

The purpose of this study is to recognize the difficulties and solve the difficulties through the activities taught by the novice teachers based on the teacher diaries. The difficulties experienced by the novice Korean teachers were divided into three parts according to critical incidents : learner, teacher, and contents problem. The teacher went through the following process of solving these difficulties. First, in order to overcome the problem of learner, the teacher personally tried counseling, development of class activity, change of class management method, and externally talked with fellow teacher or expert or found solution in internet community. Second, to overcome teacher-related problems, reflection, compaction, utilization of prior knowledge and experience, and external solutions were also tried. Third, the problems related to the contents of the curriculum revealed the hope of development rather than solving. The problem that the novice Korean teacher recognizes has often left unsolved rather than solved. This result is meaningful because it is looking at the process of trying to solve problems by recognizing and trying to solve them. (Seoul National University)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of constructing daily conversation in terms of topic and coherence and to present the case of coherence weakening of conversation through the analysis of conversations of learners who study Korean as a second language. This study emphasizes the importance of reconsidering the necessity of daily conversation education and educating Korean learners to possess the ability of constructing Korean conversation. Particularly In daily conversation education, improving the ability of introducing and ending the topic of conversation naturally in Korean and the ability of expanding to deepen the main topic through linking sub-topics is necessary. For this purpose, this study presented cases of coherence weakening through the analysis of conversations of Korean learners in respect of searching topic, changing topic and terminating topic and tried to draw implications for daily conversation education. Through this study, the coherence of conversation weakened in the category of failure of common topic search, sudden topic conversions, failure to adapt to topic conversions, and sudden termination of the topic was observed, and educational implications was suggested in each category. The purpose of this study is to identify aspects of speaking strategies that can be seen in dialogue of Korean language learners during the process of learning Korean from beginning to advanced levels. According to the research result, learners continuously used the repeating strategy from beginning to advanced levels, and it was identified that learners used a lot of borrowing and asking strategies in the beginning level, asking and stalling strategies in the intermediate level, and paraphrasing and revising strategies in the advanced level. The borrowing strategy that learners frequently used in the beginning level was from learning a foreign language that learners previously learned, which in this case refers to English speaking, but it was identified that communication in Korean is possible as the frequency of using English significantly decreased from intermediate level. This study has significance as a case study that identified how speaking strategies of Korean language learners change within a certain period of time of learning the Korean language. The present study defines the concept of text complexity first and foremost. Text complexity expresses the complexity level of the texts and the principles that complex texts are appropriate for advanced learners while simple texts are appropriate for novice learners. Based on this principle, text complexity measures three aspects: the quantitative dimension, the qualitative dimension, and the reader and task dimension. In the Korean language education, there has been much research done on the readability, which is a sub component of the quantitative dimension. However, there have been difficulties in using these studies at actual educational environment. It is difficult for people to individually analyze large amount of texts. To solve the issue, the present study established a server and database on the web and developed a program for easy access. A web-based automatic text complexity measurement program can assist various members in Korean language education. The program can provide objective evidence in the level of texts for textbook developers and can be used as a tool for selecting texts for teachers to use diverse texts in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to present ideas on how to educate citation in academic writings of foreign students and to verify the effectiveness of such methods. Citation education methods were presented and effects were analyzed before and after the actual class. First of all, the education methods of this study showed a positive improvement in the purpose and necessity of citation, the selection of appropriate texts, the use of cited methods and formats, and the integration of content. Through these study concluded that the issue of citations, which has been pointed out as a writing problem for foreign undergraduate students, could be solved to some extent through carefully organized step-by-step exercises and proper examples. This study is meaningful in that citation education methods for foreign undergraduate students have been implemented as actual classes and their effectiveness has been verified. However, it is necessary to revise the areas that need to be supplemented and present the education measures that will be most effective for students. This part will be complemented by follow-up studies. (Kyonggi University)

The present study aims to study the cognitive process of critical reaction papers and to suggest pedagogical implications on the Korean language education for international students at universities in Korea. The reaction papers submitted by 60 Korean language and literature major undergrad students were analyzed according to the cognitive hierarchy of the revised Bloom's taxonomy. The analysis indicates the followings: (1) the papers of international students were mostly at the low scored level, and a few papers were at the mid scored level; (2) the low-level papers of the international students were mainly at the understand level showing the ability to summarize main points of the source article and to express impressions on the source article. However, it shows frequent spelling errors, word choice errors, and misunderstandings of source article; (3) the mid-level scored papers of the international students were mainly at the apply level showing the ability to make explicit links between the source article and their paper; (4) the high scored papers were mainly at the analyze level and some papers were at the evaluate level showing the ability. However, none of the papers of the international students were at those levels of a cognitive process. The results show that researchers and educators in college need to develop the teaching methods and materials to improve the critical writings of international students in Korea. (Korea University)

The objective of this study is to propose a means of revising the standard curricula of King Sejong Institute, a leading establishment that promotes Korean language and culture. Its current programs vary by region, depending on the educational environment of respective countries. There is also a need to develop the standard educational programs that incorporates newly developed textbooks, “Sejong Korean language conversation” and “Sejong Korean culture”, into the presently used “Sejong Korean”. To this end, we conducted an online survey for 283 people, including the institute's faculty, administrators, and program managers, to examine how the institute's standard program is being managed and how the newly developed textbooks are being used. On the basis of early studies and the survey result, we developed a proposal on revising the standard curricula of King Sejong Institute and managing the revised curricula. For flexible curricula management, we propose three levels of program hours: 45 52 hours for Ga(A) type, 53 75 hours for Na(B) type, and 76 104 hours for Da(C) type. Furthermore, we propose an operational model for the institute's curricula that covers all the three above mentioned textbooks.
