W, Fe, and carbon powders were mechanical alloyed to produce W35Fe43C22 ternary alloy powders containing nanocrystal W embedded within amorphous matrix. When the powder samples were heated to the primary crystallization temperature of 735℃, most parts of their amorphous region were fully crystallized to [W,Fe]- rich M6C carbides. Interestingly, a little portion of the carbides changes to stoichiometric line compounds (M12C and W6Fe7) and a solution phase (Fe-rich bcc), and remaining parts of the crystallites were amorphized again. The resulting microstructure was retained even by cyclic heating between room temperature of 1,200oC, and thus we found that the amorphous structure can be irreversibly formed at above glass transition temperature. Copper powder dispersed with 4 vol.% of Cr2O3 was successfully produced by a simple milling at 210 K with a mixture of Cu2O, Cu and Cr elemental powders, followed by Hot Pressing (HP) at 1123 K and 50 MPa for 2h to consolidate the milled powder. The microstructure of the HPed material was characterized by standard metallographic techniques such as XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TEM and STEM-EDS. The results of STEMEDS analysis showed that the HPed materials comprised a mixture of nanocrystalline Cu matrix and Cr2O3 dispersoid with a homogeneous bimodal size distribution. The mechanical properties of the HPed materials were characterized by micro Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The thermodynamic considerations on the heat of formation, the incubation time to ignite MSR (Mechanically induced Self-sustaining Reaction), and the adiabatic temperature for the heat of displacement reaction between the oxide-metal are made for the delayed for mation of Cr2O3 dispersoid in terms of MSR suppression. The results of TEM observation and hardness test indicated that the relatively large dispersoids in the HPed materials are attributed to the significant coarsening for the high temperature consolidation; this leads to the low Vickers hardness value. Based on the thermodynamic calculation for the operating processes with a limited number of parameters, the formation kinetics and coarsening of the Cr2O3 dispersoid are discussed. High temperature flow behaviors of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C tool steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests on a Gleeble simulator. The compressive test temperature was varied from 850 to 1,150℃ with the strain rate ranges of 0.05 and 10 s-1. The maximum height reduction was 45%. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrhenius-typed equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was proposed to simulate the hot deformation behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to compare with the constitutive model. It was concluded that the ANN model showed more accurate prediction compared with the constitutive model for describing the hot compressive behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel. In this study, the electrical conductivity, transmittance and gas barrier properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were studied. DLC is an insulator, and has transmittance and oxygen gas barrier properties varying depending on the thickness of the thin film. Recently, many researchers have been trying to apply DLC properties to specific industrial conditions. The DLC thin films were deposited by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process. The doping gas was used for the DLC film to have electrical conductivity, and the optimum conditions of transmittance and gas barrier properties were established by adjusting the gas ratio and DLC thickness. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of the DLC thin film, N2 doping gas was used for CH4 or C2H2 gas. Then, a heat treatment process was performed for 30 minutes in a box furnace set at 200℃. The lowest sheet resistance value of the DLC film was found to be 18.11 kΩ/cm2. On the other hand, the maximum transmittance of the DLC film deposited on the PET substrate was 98.8%, and the minimum oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the DLC film of C2H2 gas was 0.83.
