Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process by melting metallic powders and stacking into layers, and can product complex shapes or near-net-shape (NNS) that are difficult to product by conventional processes. Also, SLM process is able to raise the efficiency of production by creating a streamlined manufacturing process. For manufacturing in SLM process using Ti-6Al-4V powder, analysis of microstructural evolution and evaluation of mechanical properties are essential because of rapid melting and solidification process of powders according to high laser power and rapid scan speed. In addition, it requires a post-processing because the soundness and mechanical properties are degraded by defects such as pore, un-melted powder, lack-of-fusion, etc. In this study, hot isostatic press (HIP) was conducted as a post-processing on SLM-printed Ti- 6Al-4V alloy. Microstructure of post-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy was compared to as-built Ti-6Al-4V, and the evolution of quasi-static (Vickers hardness, room temperature tensile characteristic) and dynamic (high-cycle fatigue characteristic) mechanical properties were analyzed.

Four air hardening steels with carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum variations have been used in this study to find out the optimal chemical compositions of steels with over 1200 MPa tensile strength for automotive subframe. The dimensional changes after heat treatment were determined for two automotive parts with open and closed cross sections using 3D scanner. When four steels were austenitized at 900℃ for 30 seconds, cooled at 3℃/s, reheated to 450℃ for 10 seconds followed by air cooling to simulate hot-dip galvanizing treatment showed ultra high tensile strength over 1200 MPa. Rear floor cross member with open cross section revealed much bigger dimensional changes than subframe with closed cross section after heat treatment at 900℃ for 20 minutes followed by air cooling.

Due to high corrosion resistance, Zinc has been widely used in the automobile, shipping or construction industries as a galvanizing material. Zinc is popular as a coating element, but its low mechanical strength impede the expansion of applications as a load-bearing structure. The mechanical strength of Zinc can be increased through zinc based alloy process, but the ductility is significantly reduced. In this study, the mechanical strength and ductility of Zinc-Magnesium alloys with respect to heat treatment hold time was investigated. In order to enhance the mechanical strength of Zinc, a Zinc-Magnesium alloy was fabricated by a melting process. The heat treatment process was performed to improve the ductility of Zinc-Magnesium alloy. The microstructure of the heat-treated alloy specimen was analyzed using SEM. The hardness and compressive strength of the specimen were measured by a micro-hardness tester and a nano-indenter, respectively.

Recently, many studies on growth of single crystal diamond using MPECVD have been conducted. The heteroepitaxial method is one of the methods for growing diamonds on a large-area substrate, and research on synthesis of single crystal diamonds using SrTiO3, MgO, and sapphire substrates has been attempted. In addition, research is being conducted to reduce the internal stress generated during diamond growth and to improve the crystallinity of the diamond. The compressive stress generated therein causes peeling and bowing from the substrate. This study aimed to synthesize heteroepitaxial single crystal diamonds with high crystallinity by surface modification. A diamond thin film was first grown on a sapphire/Ir substrate by MPECVD, and then etched with H2 gas to modified the morphology and roughness of the surface. A secondary diamond layer was grown on the surface, and the internal stress, crystallinity of the diamond were investigated. As a result, the fabrication of single crystal diamonds with improved crystallinity was confirmed.

Due to excellent properties such as high specific strength and low density, application of magnesium alloys have been rapidly increased. However, magnesium alloy has a serious problem that is easily oxidized when exposed to high-temperature. For this reason, magnesium alloys have been generally used for SF6 gas such as protective cover gas in casting and melting, but it has been reported that this gas has a serious influence on global warming. Therefore, many researchers have been studied to improve the oxidation resistance of magnesium alloy. It was reported that addition of Be, Ca and CaO in magnesium alloy can improve the oxidation properties. In this study, the possibility of improving the oxidation resistance by adding CaO extracted from oyster shells was investigated. Oyster shells were completely decomposed into CaO and CO2 by annealing. With the addition of CaO, a coexistence region of MgO + CaO was formed in the oxide layer and its thickness was also reduced.
