Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets are mainly used as core materials for transformers and motors. They should have excellent magnetic properties such as low core loss, high magnetic flux density and high permeability. In order to improve the magnetic properties of the electrical steel sheet, it is important to form Goss oriented grains with a very strong {110}<001> orientation. Recently, efforts have been made to develop Goss grains by controlling processes such as hot rolling, cold rolling, and primary and secondary recrystallization. In this study, the sheets containing 3.2 and 3.4wt.% Si were used, which were rolled with 1 and 10 passes with total thickness reduction of 89%. Heating was carried out for primary recrystallization with different heating rates of 25℃/s and 24℃/min until 720℃. The behavior of Goss-, {411}<148>-, and {111}<112>-oriented grains were analyzed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and electron back-scatter diffraction(EBSD) analysis. The area fraction of Goss-oriented grains increased with the number of rolling passes during cold rolling; however, after the primary recrystallization, the area fraction of the Goss grains was higher and exact Goss grains were found in the specimens subjected to rapid heating after one rolling pass.

Two different modes of rolling were applied to control the texture development in tantalum sheet. In the conventional uni-directional rolling, the typical rolling textures of a body-centered cubic metal which was primarily composed of <110>//(rolling direction) was developed. In a cross rolling where the specimen was rotated by 90o between each pass, the rotated cube components, i.e. {100}<011> were greatly reinforced. The prediction of lattice rotation by the full-constraint Taylor model showed that the high stability and the symmetry of the rotated cube components caused their strengthening in cross-rolling. The two specimens were heated to 1,100℃ at 9℃/ min and held for 1 hour for annealing, then cooled to room temperature in atmosphere. In spite of the significant difference in the deformation textures, the annealing textures were very similar. They developed strong <111>// (plane normal) components with negligible intensity at the rotated cube components, which was attributed to the negligible capability of the latter components to provide effective recrystallized grains.

This present study deals with the hydrogen embrittlement properties of austenitic Fe-30Mn-0.2C(-1.5Al) high-manganese steels for cryogenic applications. They were electrochemically charged with hydrogen and then subjected to tensile tests for evaluating hydrogen embrittlement behavior. Tensile test results showed that after hydrogen charging the tensile strength and elongation of the Al-free steel were more remarkably decreased with increasing current density when compared to the Al-added steel. After hydrogen charging of the Al-added steel, it was found that the measured hydrogen content was small and silver particles were relatively less decorated. Therefore, the Al-added steel has a superior hydrogen embrittlement resistance to the Al-free steel because the addition of Al suppresses the injection of hydrogen during electrochemical hydrogen charging.

The microstructure of a newly developed alloy tool steel (KV1) for casting cold-work press dies was analyzed using advanced scanning electron microscopy. Its mechanical properties and durability in use as piercing inserts were tested. It contained a continuous network structure which originated from the micro-segregation during solidification and was composed of retained austenite and primary carbides. However, after quenching and tempering, its continuity was destroyed due to the decomposition of austenite. The discontinuous spatial distribution and the smaller amount of primary carbide in the network presented KV1 enhanced ductility compared to the common alloy (HK700). The reduced C and Cr, the addition of V resulted in a small amount of primary carbides which primarily consisted of MC, as well as fine and uniform dispersion of precipitates. Owing to these features, KV1 exhibited delayed initiation of chipping when used for piercing inserts.

In the present study we proposed new equations to predict the liquidus temperature curve for hypoeutectic Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy. A thermodynamic simulation was carried out to calculate the liquidus temperature, eutectic temperature and eutectic Si concentration with different Si, Cu, and Mg contents in hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. Regressed equations were derived using the thermodynamic simulation results by multiple regression analysis. The proposed equations were compared with the equations reported previously by other researchers and agreed better with the experimental data. The addition of Cu and Mg lowered the eutectic temperature. The eutectic Si concentration was decreased by adding Cu whereas that was increased by adding Mg. Al-Si binary phase diagram was successfully predicted with a consideration of the effect of Cu and Mg addition by using the proposed equations.

Simple tensile tests and microstructural investigations have been performed on extrudates of high strength aluminum alloys such as 7075, 7021 and 7xxx(Sc) to understand correlation between extruding conditions and extruded properties. Tensile specimens which were taken from different locations at the same cross section of an extrudate were tested at room temperature and with a strain rate of 8.9 × 10-5/s. The microstructures according to the locations at the cross section have been observed using optical microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) mapping to characterize the effect on stress-strain curve. The results could be classified in three types independent of alloying contents and extusion methods. The fine differences in the stressstrain curves were resulted from inhomogenity in the microstructures according to locations of an extrudate which were performed through instantaneous extruding conditions such as temperature, strain rate and strain.
