초록보기

To date, there has been a renewed and steady interest in designing language syllabuses based on functional grounds, moving away from structural understanding of a language. This trend has been particularly strong in the development of ESP (English for Specific Purpose) since ESP focuses on developing authentic and contextualized English skills in a specific discipline. Based on theoretical understanding of functional discourse grammar and pedagogical focus of ESP, the main purpose of this paper is to examine the functional way of teaching English punctuation, especially a comma usage, instead of focusing on the linguistic location specified by its rules. In order to accomplish this goal, this paper explores diverse incidents of commas used in journalistic writing, a U.S. college newspaper (The Daily Collegian). Particularly, it not only gives attention to the relation with certain grammatical features that necessitate the presence of a comma, but also it delves into the use of commas, which is beyond the basic rules. Based on the result, this study suggests several pedagogical implications for functional approaches of 'language in use' in designing ESP grammar courses beyond the traditional rule-oriented instruction.

초록보기

This study introduces a teaching method I use in my English business presentation class (hereafter, my class). It explores how a role-playing approach is used for teaching business speech to undergraduates and why it is a useful tool for teaching business presentation. It suggests the important aspect of familiarities with form, function and context of stakeholder communications in order for business language learners to communicating successfully. It supports the claim that creativity is central to success in business (communication). After embarking on the description of the topics discussed in my class, this study exemplifies the students' ability to apply the analytical and/or argumentative procedures they learn in class and to solve problems they may encounter in their future workplace. It concludes with implications for pedagogy and future research.

초록보기

This paper aims to address the issue related to a model of English gravitating around English as an intercultural language (EIcL) (K.-Y. Lee, 2012, 2013; Sifakis, 2004, 2007; Sifakis & Sougari, 2003, 2007), so EIcL needs to be viewed as a contemporary workable one among many other different models of English in the study of English language teaching (ELT). This is mainly because (1) EIcL views the English language as a language of heterogeneous norms and grammars bound predominantly for communication, comprehensibility, and culture and (2) EIcL not only promotes interculturally multidialectical English speakers/listeners among world Englishes by promoting linguistic and cultural diversity with cultural tolerance, but minimizes the so-called inner circle speakers' linguistic and cultural dominances. For this, this paper suggests eight EIcL guidelines which could empower ELT teachers' intercultural English language competency. For this, this paper first addresses why EIcL among the variety of models of English needs to be dealt in the contemporary ELT arena. Secondly, it suggests the eight workable EIcL teaching guidelines.

초록보기

This study aims at investigating whether the goal of the revised education system based on the 4th Industrial Revolution has been appropriately delivered, understood, and achieved by teachers and students through textbook analysis. A survey was undertaken to identify whether different perceptions exist between the teachers and students with regard to the goal of developing competencies in the revised English textbooks. According to the results, both teachers and students agreed that the aims of the revised English curriculum were fairly well established in the textbooks; however, there was a big gap between the two groups in the understanding of the revised curriculum reflected in the textbooks: the different aspects of the previous and current textbooks, the most reinforced part in the current textbooks, and the change of teaching methods. It is acknowledged that it is necessary to improve teachers' and learners' interest in and awareness of the revised curriculum reflecting the spirit of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

초록보기

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Korean university students' perception on what makes a good business English class. Korean colleges and universities offer various practical English courses to their students; however, how students really perceive the practicality in those courses is less known. In order to understand students' perception on what makes a good business English class, a qualitative study based on students' essays was conducted. From the analysis of 55 students' short essays about students' ideas and experiences on business English classes, 6 main perceptional areas of good business English classes are identified. Students perceive good business English classes by 1) class outcome, 2) class content, 3) teaching method, 4) class materials, 5) class communication, and 6) class environment. Based on the results of this study, more effective teaching plans and practical teaching materials are discussed to better meet students' expectations on practical English courses like business English.

Questions about the function of there have been suggested by many researchers due to its specificity. There can function either as an expletive or as an adverb, in which case it is accented like an adverb and divides unaccusative and unergative verbs. This research focuses on these functions of there from the perspective of comparative linguistics with Korean and Russian because those languages use different ways to realize sentences with location information. In addition, we would like to support our thesis with the analysis of machine translations (Google Translate & Naver Papago) to show the function of there. As a result, with the exception of syntactical and phonological aspects of adverb there suggested by Kolln and Funk(2008), traits of there as adverb do not appear in phonological tests and machine translators' output, and usage of there with indefinite particle and usage of there with definite particle do not show difference in speech and translations from English to Korean and Russian. Expletive there functions only to change focus of sentences from subjects to location in Korean and Russian in the process of translation.
