This essay aims to explore the imagery of the hawk in Hopkins's “The Windhover,”-comparing it with the bird imagery in the poems of Newman and Kingsley, who are both well-known poets and religious figures of the Victorian era.. Firstly the imagery of birds described in Newman's three poems “TO F. W. N.- A Birthday Offering”, “Solitude” and The Dream of Gerontius are analyzed with regard to the features they have in common with Hopkins's. Secondly, Kingsley's three poems, “The Knight's Leap at Altenahr”, The Saint's Tragedy and “The day of the Lord” have been elucidated in order to illuminate its similarities with Hopkins's. As the result, Newman's and Kingsley's bird imagery in their religious poems seem to have had considerable effects on the imagery of the hawk in Hopkin's “The Windhover.”

Medbh McGuckian, the first prominent Northern Irish female poet, has been focused on the relationship between creative activities and domestic life. In her first volume, The Flower Master, Medbh McGuckian ostensibly seemed to be concerned about representing the female body, female sexuality, and gender roles through poetic images. This study suggests that she raises issues regarding representations of female sexuality by female writers. However, she actually contends that the energy from the initiation of female sexuality has the capacity to be transposed into creative activities, such as writing, painting and gardening. Since Medbh McGuckian underlines writing by women among creative activities, this study analyzes her employment of 'slippage', an intentional mistake regarding poetic language arrangement, and her writing strategies 'from within' symbolic order of male dominant culture for raising women's voices in Northern Ireland.

This paper presents a comparative reading of M. NourbeSe Philip and Myung Mi Kim's fragmentary poems that draw attention to their countertextual impulse. Both of them, infamous for the radical experiments of poetic forms, have tried to delve into the relationships between history and poetry, between language and reality, between poetic form and content. For these two poets, poetic form has long been sustained as the praxis and methodology of writing to attain the public value of poetry and to problematize the ideological aspect of English as the world language in the current world system. The form of fragments, among others, has been the creative power to sustain the unspeakable witness and impossible representation in the past history. While the uncanniness of the fragmentary forms estranges readers sometimes, it provides a necessary position and effective angle from which to turn toward the unspeakable, the untraceable, the unrepresentable. Hence the claims of Philip and Kim that poetry must tread the route of words and vacant space in a new way, in the fracture and disseminations, at any how, if it is to bear witness to the human history and the forgotten, can construct the common counter-textual ground in the pages as the mixture of sound and silence, letters and blank, meaning and nonsense. This article, while relocating the scattered words in the texts of Philip and Kim as the act of de-contamination, argues that the radical explorations with the fragments in these two contemporary poets invite readers to rethink the public value of poetry, poetry as praxis of social, historial imperatives that can be fulfilled through everyday writing and reading.

초록보기

Going through a historical trauma, it is more than necessary for us, poetry specialists, to think about what poetry can do in difficult times. For it has been an age-old argument that poetry is useless since it cannot do anything about global warfares, economic collapses, or growing nationalist agendas. Yet interestingly enough, people are turning to poetry as they collectively face difficult and challenging times. Probably it is because the emotional stability is just as significant as the physical settlement in a quasi-state of war when the world is chaotic and uncertain due to the global competitions for the necessities of life. Given, this paper reads Adrienne Rich's An Atlas of the Difficult World and re-examines Rich's idea of a poet's integrity to take a responsibility for his/her poetry when engaging in the difficult world. Then, this paper reads the school among the ruins and Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth and illuminates her tenacious dream of a common language. After all, it is a poet, instead of politicians, who have a human eye to connect an individual's emotions to those of global others and awaken us to the common language of humanity and thus help us restore human eyes to survive difficult and challenging times through the global solidarity of engaged citizens.

초록보기

In most of her poems about nature, Dickinson portrays the creatures and the phenomena around the world about us. The world of nature is hauntingly mysterious enough to attract our attention. In spite of nature's greatness, Dickinson also emphasizes the greatness of representing nature in poetry. Her desire lies not in literal representation of nature, but in interpretative representation of nature in her peculiar way. Dickinson's nature is a projection of her mind into nature through her creative power. One of the important words used in her nature poems is frost which plays a significant role in her writing. In particular, Dickinson writes many poems about frost in connection with flowers. Dickinson's attitude toward frost deserves our attention because she assigns a consistent image and meaning to the natural phenomenon in her writings. This essay aims to show how Dickinson reads nature in relation to her poetic self and how and why she portrays frost or frost images in her poems.

초록보기

In an age of doubt and skepticism, Matthew Arnold diagnoses melancholy and mental emptiness as the disease of Victorian society, and believes poetry must impart the emotional warmth and spiritual strength that religion had once offered. In “The Scholar-Gypsy,” inspired by a reading of Joseph Glanvill's The Vanity of Dogmatizing (1661) and even more by his own memory of Oxford days, Arnold creates a symbolic figure, “scholar-gypsy,” adequate to the burden of an immense nostalgia. Unlike the mythic and idyllic milieu of traditional pastoral, the poem ponders on the “strange disease of modern life” in the real landscape of Victorian society, thus can be called an applied modern pastoral. The old tale of the frustrated Oxford scholar becomes a parable of the modern man's vain, lonely quest of unity and totality. Arnold's pastoral vision of youth and integrity scores a triumph over the incessant change and division of modern times, through the distinctive poetics and the deft application of the traditional pastoralism, creating a complex fiction that incorporates contemporary ideas into the unconventional context. Arnold figures out the detached but elusive nature of a pastoral ideal, and comes to a fuller understanding of modern human condition.
