본 논문은 1927년부터 1936년까지 『매일신보(每日新報)』에 수록된 38편의 괴담 서사를 분석범위로 삼아 근대 괴담의 정체성을 확인하였다. 『매일신보』 괴담의 감성과 문법은 장르 정착의 사회적 여건, 공급자와 수용자의 서사욕망, 해당담론의 질서와 관습 아래 피 식민지인들이 상상하고 해석한 타자성의 일면을 기록하였다. 괴담의 구성방식과 표현은 근대적 서사 요소 중 효과적인 부분을 선택해 괴기하고 비현실적인 소재 및 이야기와 결합하고 놀람과 공포, 현재적 체감의 목적을 달성하는 나름의 문법을 보여주었다. 괴담의 세계관은 타자에 대한 외면과 억압이 언제 어디서나 있어왔고 그 억압은 공동체의 암묵적 동의 없이 이루어지지 않는다는 죄책감을 공유한다. 괴담의 고유성은 이해 불가능한 영역의 사건, 현상이 주체에게 발생시킨 공포와 긴장을 이성적으로 장악하거나 해결할 수 없다고 자인하는 패배감과 무력감에 있다. 『매일신보』 괴담은 다른 시공간, 비현실, 가려진 타자성을 공포와 불안의 감각으로 구조화해 선보였다는 실험성을 갖고 있었다. 본 논문은 『매일신보』 괴담을 통해 시대적 균열을 감각화 하는 초기 근대서사의 특정 문법과 그 감각이 다시 하위 코드로 분화하는 방식을 추적했다는 의의를 갖는다.
This study set out to analyze the narratives of 38 strange stories published in Maeilshinbo in 1927 ~ 1936 and examine the identity of modern strange stories. The sensibility and grammar of the strange stories published in Maeilshinbo recorded some aspects of otherness imagined and interpreted by the colonized people under the social conditions of genre settlement, narrative desire of suppliers and users, and the order and convention of the concerned discourse. In terms of organization methods and expressions, the strange stories showed the grammar of selecting effective parts in the modern narrative elements, combining them with bizarre and unrealistic materials and stories, and achieving the goals of surprise, fear, and present sense. The world view of strange stories shared the guilty conscience that the suppression of others had been everywhere from the beginning and that the suppression would be impossible without the implicit consent of the community. The unique nature of strange stories was in the sense of defeat and feeling of helplessness when people would admit they were not able to dominate or resolve reasonably the fear and tension caused by events and phenomena in the realm beyond their comprehension. The strange stories published in Maeilshinbo had experimental nature as they structurized and displayed different time and space, unreality, and hidden otherness with the sense of fear and anxiety. The present study is significant in that it traced certain grammar in early modern narratives that expressed the cracks of the times in senses and the sprouts that divided the senses into lower-rank codes based on strange stories published in Maeilshinbo.
